LAKSHADWEEP

--------------The palm tree covered islands of Lakshadweep add up to only 32 sq.km scattered around 4200 sq.k.m of lagoon waters. The archipelago lies 300 k.m west of Kerala, and is divided into the Northern Amindivi group, the Lacdive group and the isolated Minicoy in the south.
------------------------Lakshadweep is the tiniest Union Territory of India. The term Lakshadweep, literally means a hundred thousand islands (it is not the case though). Lakshadweep consists of 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks. Only 10 islands are inhabited. Non-availability of drinking water accounts for a number of islands being uninhabited.
-------------------------A special permit is required to visit Lakshadweep. While several islands have opened to visitors in recent years, foreigners are limited to day trips to islands on a boat cruise, or staying only at Bangaram Island, where there is an island resort. The beautiful calm lagoon forms an ideal spot for water sports, swimming, diving and basking on warm sandy beaches. Marine life exhibits can be seen at the Marine Aquarium. There are glass bottomed boats to see the exotic underwater world, if you are not in a mood to swim or dive.
