PERIYAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
This wildlife sanctuary is also known as the Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary. This is one of the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in South India. A large number of nature lovers visit here every year. The forest slopes into the manmade lake at the bottom of the hill. This lake is the water source for the animals as they come here to drink or to take a dip. Take a boat trip around the lake and see the animals in their natural surroundings.
Elephants, Gaur, Sambhar, Bison, Spotted deer, Tigers, Leopards, Malabar flying squirrels, Strip necked mongooses etc., can be spotted here. Also you can see a large number of species of birds including Nilgiri Wood Pigeons,Blue-winged Parakeets, White bellied Tree Pies, laughing Thrushes and Fly Catchers
PARAMBIKULAM WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
This wildlife sanctuary is a reservoir of tranquil greenery established comfortably in a valley between the Annamalai ranges of Tamilnadu and the Nelliyampathy ranges of Kerala. It abounds in a variety of trees, mainly teak, neem, sandalwood and rose wood.
The rich fauna includes Elephants, Bison, Gaurs, Sloth Bears, Wild Boars, Sambhars, Chital Tigers, Panthers Crocodiles, Bonnet Macaques, Spectacled Cobras, Kraits, Vipers, Turtles, Darters, Little Cormorants and Black Eagles.
IDUKKI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
A picturesque lake, a majestic arch dam across two hills and roaming herds of elephants and gaurs are sights that lure you to this enchanting canopy of tropical semi-evergreen and deciduous forests.
The fauna includes, Elephants, Sambhar, Deer, Wild Dogs, Jungle Cats, Tiger, Cobra, Viper, Crait, Jungle Fowl, Myna, Laughing Thrush, Black Bulbul, Peafowl, Woodpecker,Kingfisher etc.,
WAYANAD WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
It is also known as the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. Rich in bio-diversity, this sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri biosphere reserve, which has been established with the chief object of conserving the biological heritage of the region.
This sanctuary has excellent moist deciduous teak forests and marshes dominated by bamboo and other grasses. Flora in this sanctuary includes, Teak, Maruthu, Rosewood, Vengal etc., and the rich fauna includes Elephants, Tigers, Panthers, Jungle Cats, Civet Cats, Monkeys, Wild Dogs, Bison, Deer, Bears, Racquet-tailed Drongo, Barbet etc.,
CHINNAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
This sanctuary is a unique thorny scrub forest with xerophytes species. Dry deciduous forests, high shoals and wet grasslands are also found here. Located in the rain-shadow area of the Western Ghats, unlike other sanctuaries, it has only less than 50 rainy days in a year. The undulated terrain with rocky patches adds to the scenic splendour of the sanctuary.
As one travels from Karimuthi to Chinnar Elephants, Spotted Deer, Sambhar, Hanuman monkey and even Peacocks can be seen on either sides of the road. Other attractions in this sanctuary are Elephants, Gaurs, Panthers, Spotted Deer, Sambhars, Grizzled Giant Squirrels, Hanuman Langurs, Peacocks, Star Tortoises and Travancore evening browns.
ERAVIKULAM WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
This sanctuary is set up for the preservation of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary stands out for the stark beauty of its rolling grasslands, and shoals spread over a 97 sq. k.m of unblemished natural splendour. The highest peak south of the mighty Himalayas, Anamudi towers over the sanctuary in majestic pride. The slopes of the hills abound in all kinds of rare flora and fauna.
Now the park has the largest known population of Tahrs existing in the world. The park also shelters Atlas Moth, Elephants, Sambhars, Gaurs, Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Tigers and Leopards.
SILENT VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
Silent Valley National park echoes with the sounds of teeming wildlife. Perhaps, nowhere else one can find such a representative collection of peninsular mammals as in this park. This park has a huge variety of wildlife with over 100 species of Butterflies and 400 species of
Moths and other animals like Ceylon Frog Moth, Great Indian Hornbill, and the Lion-Tailed Macaque. Silent Valley National Park has got over a 100 species of plants of medicinal value.
THATTEKKAD BIRD SANCTUARY
This bird sanctuary is located in the dense tropical evergreen and deciduous forests and grassland patches. It is home to over a 500 winged species. This is a peninsular land of 25 sq.km covered with thick forests and plantations of teakwood and rosewood. Rare species of birds like the Crimson-Throated Barbet, Bee-eater, Sunbird, Shrike, Night Heron and the Black-winged Kite are also seen here.
This rare picturesque landscape is surely a nature lover's paradise. The rivers here are rich in fish and are shallow for the most part of the year. The sanctuary was designed by Dr. Salim Ali, the renowned ornithologist.
KUMARAKOM BIRD SANCTUARY
This sanctuary, situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, is known for its varied avian population. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is home for over a 100 species of local varieties such as Water Fowl, Cuckoos and Owls as well as the migratory birds such as the Siberian Crane.
Parrots, Teal, Larks, Flycatchers, Wood Beetle and other species of birds are also seen here during their respective migratory seasons. Motor boats and house boats can be hired for bird watching cruises.
