“Like What” Out 23rd June
Tommi unleash “Like What” their fiercely addictive debut single on 23rd June 2003.
Being young means lots of things, to some 18 year old girls it means you want to stay out late, have fun, play your hip hop LOUD, take the p***, scratch mix, rap and maybe even be a star. Well, take five young tomboys, add a ton of street attitude, rugged style, killer dance moves and fresh tunes. Then minus stage school thought patterns, skimpy outfits, and you’ve got what's been missing for a long time – Tommi, an authentic girl crew who aren’t about to compromise who they are.
The five that comprise Tommi are Stylus (bona fide pirate DJ), Peekaboo (Scottish rapper with unhinged rhyming skills), Lil Chill (the merry prankster), Bambi (gold jewellery clad rude girl) and last but not least Mi$ Thang (the Queen styler).
“Like What” is a breath of fresh air! The beat is dirty, uptempo and coupled with genius synth lines to infectious effect. This is Tommi’s trademark style, UK urban pop with attitude and youthful fizz that is set to rule the airwaves this summer.
The single is penned by T-Boz from TLC and Kandi (writer of TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’ and Destiny’s Child’s ‘Bills Bills Bills’) and produced by Bloodshy (Miss Dynamite, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Milian, TLC). “Like What” celebrates having fun in a club, as Bambi puts it “You see it all the time when you walk into a club and people are standing around in corners not dancing. It’s about us saying, ‘We’re having a good time and we’re going to dance even if no one else is’. We’re going to be out there, be ourselves and have a laugh no matter what. That says a lot about us and the message we’re trying to get across.”
Watch this space for Tommi’s forthcoming debut album. The group have co-written all of the album tracks bar one. As Lil Chill explains“A lot of songs on the album are about what we’ve been through. It’s almost like an introduction to Tommi, and hopefully people will be able to relate to it”. Peekaboo continues “The album has got loads of different sounds on it, and there are loads of issues that we care about like safe sex on there too”. Their commitment to this issue is reflected in Tommi’s support of the RUThinkin Safe Sex Campaign.
