Decide on one or a few volunteer opportunities that might fit your interests, values and personality.
Call at least one of the "volunteer clearinghouse" organizations, like United Way, and/or subscribe to one of the volunteer opportunities newsletters.
As you gather names and phone numbers of likely agencies, call each one and ask for information on their volunteer opportunities.
Also ask to speak to the volunteer coordinator. Ask him or her for other organizations s/he knows of that have volunteer opportunities similar to theirs.
Although you may have a clear idea of what you want to do at this point, be flexible. You may want to learn about other volunteer opportunities you had'nt thought of, but might enjoy. If the cause is more important to you than other job tasks, find out what jobs suit your personality, so you will feel that you are making a real contribution to that cause.
Be persistent.
Give volunteer coordinators constructive criticism about their entry procedures.
If you don't find an organization that does what you want to do, consider doing it anyway! An awful lot of those organizations started that way! Or just create a special jib just for you!
ABOVE ALL ELSE, DON'T RELY ON ANY SINGLE RESOURCE FOR FINDING A VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY! USE AT LEAST THREE, BETTER YET ALL! |
