A VIEW OF THE SWAMP

MORNING--THE OLD URSULINE CONVENT

In the morning, I took a walking tour of the French Quarter. The highlight of the tour was the Archbishop Antoine Blanc Memorial, including the Old Ursuline Convent, constructed in 1745-53, and St. Mary's Church, constructed in 1845.

OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR

This stained glass window in St. Mary's Church commemorates the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812.

AFTERNOON--SWAMP TOUR

In the afternoon, I took a tour through a swamp near New Orleans aboard a swamp boat. We saw a variety of wildlife, including birds and alligators. We also sampled a traditional New Orleans meal of red beans and rice.

Alligator

AN ALLIGATOR

This is one of the many alligators we saw on the tour. The guides on these swamp tours attract the alligators to the boat by throwing marshmallows into the water.

After dinner, I rounded out the day by going to listen to some traditional New Orleans jazz at Preservation Hall. Despite a lack of certain creature comforts (no bathrooms, inadequate seating), the music was thoroughly enjoyable.
