The history of the Paradores dates back to the beginning of the last century. Commissioned by the government in 1910 to create a network of hotels for travellers,
the Marquis de la Vega Inclán, beginning with the building of a hotel in the Gredos Mountains, set the ball rolling for what is now known as the Paradores de España network.

Since the opening of the Parador de Gredos, the tradition has grown, and the formation  of a Board of Paradores has established a palpable commitment to preserving historical buildings such as castles, palaces and convents and their surroundings while providing luxurious and idyllic accommodation for visitors to Spain, the Canary Islands and the Spanish cities in North Africa. The hotels themselves offer the traveller the chance to step into the history of Iberia, to eat and sleep in the same building as some of the most important people in the region's history, at a price which by international standards is modest.

One of the benefits of building these hotels in areas deemed unprofitable to private owners is that invariably these areas are unspoiled and in magnificent locations.

For that extra bit of cultural exposure, most of the Paradores has a restaurant offering the whole range of regional delights, from the “Salmorejo cordobés” (cold vegetables soup) of Cordoba to the stately wines of pontevedra.

Hostelling en luxe, backpacking without the backpack or simply wishing to complete the visit to Spain or its neighbours in style, the list of Paradores is extensive enough to provide for most regions you would care to name.
