(Questions taken from the Archives, Digest 0, Message 6, May 1, 1998)

Favorite hero
Marsha: August Falcon. The handsomest man in London, deadly duelist and sarcastic, also secretly vulnerable and can feel a great deal. He was what hooked me on PV. And Roland is in a class of his own, but I'll gush about him when we continue with GC.

Judy: Jonathon Armitage

Marie: Easy one: August Falcon, loved him the first time I met him.

Toni: Roland Mathieson! (Of course!)

Victoria: Kit (Christopher, Lord Aynsworth)

Michele: toss up between Falcon and Camille

Dolores: Roland, though Devenish and Trevelyn de Villars are right up there. Honorable mentions to Tony from Love Alters Not, Ligun Doone and Lucian St. Clair.

Laura: Roland is very romantic and intense, and we got to watch him through 3 - 4 books, so he's number one. I have to say that I really like Mike Owens from Poor Splendid Wings, too. I like a man who lives up to his ideals.

Kristen: Trevelyan de Villars. He's smart, he's funny, he's not fabulously handsome like some of her heros but he does have "beautiful grey eyes," he can laugh at himself - and he's putting a tremendous effort into rescuing Jacobites even though he's not one himself.

Marsha: August, Tony, Roly: , Quentin and Mitchell and Alain (probably)

Colleen: They are all so wonderful! I like a couple for different reasons, though. The most compelling character is August Falcon. But the one that I would actually want to take home and live with is Gordon Chandler. If I can't have Gordon, I'd settle for . . . well, this is tougher than I thought. Harry Redmond is a candidate as is Mitchell. Tio is a strong contender. I must also admit to a partiality for Robert MacTavish. Hmmm . . . (off into a daze . . .)

Favorite heroine
Marsha: Gwen Rossiter. She's funny, corageous and resorceful. And she can match August sarcasm for sarcasm. And I like Fiona and Dimity a lot.

Judy: Leonie Haliwell

Marie: Gwendoyln Rossiter

Toni: Dimity Cranford; Gwendolyn Rossiter, Sally Leith

Victoria: Mia Buchanan

Michele: Gwen Rossiter and Charity Strand

Dolores: Dimity Cranford, I guess. I love the way she ran around the whole book in clothes that she was busting out of.

Laura: Mia Buchanan is funny, wise, intelligent, feisty and she gets things done. I just love her! I also wish I was tall with Titian hair! Second best: Charity Strand because of the contrast in her frail appearance and the way she literally fights for her man and saves him several times.

Kristen: Mia Buchanan. I can understand why half of London was at her feet, even though she's not beautiful. I could feel her charm through the printed page. I loved her scene with the Admiral when he thinks she's one of Garrett's lady-friends - and even more the scene when she wears all the jewels to "lure" Hawkhurst. She's smart and strong and stubborn, and I like the Grand Sophy-like touch of "Mia's Mandates."

Marsha: Gwen, Mitten, Fiona, (and Penny, Charity)

Colleen: Much easier. Charity and Penelope and Gwendolyn. Charity for the reasons cited; Penelope because she has GUTS! and Gwendolyn because she is so funny.

Least favorite hero
Marsha: Diccon. Can't forgive him for what he did to Harry. Also, Roland was willing to defy the law and die to save the woman he loved, while Diccon would have arrested and therefore condemned to death, his beloved's brother.

Judy: August Falcon - a little sneering goes a long way.

Marie: I don't think that there is any I dislike. I suppose if I had to pick one it would be... no I can't pick one.

Toni: Diccon Paisley (I liked him as a supporting)

Victoria: Alaine Devenish, liked him as secondary, but not as hero

Dolores: Robert Victor, I guess, though I don't really dislike him. I disliked Craig Tyndale as as a suitor to Yolande, since he was cutting out Devenish, but I enjoyed his interaction with Devenish apart from that.

Laura: Craig Winters: very dull for a Veryan hero! Also just having finished WW, I am not thrilled with Treve; he waited too long before revealing his sterling character. And Perry Cranford doesn't do much for me.

Kristen: I'm not sitting here any longer deciding which one I like the least - I'm not getting anywhere with it!

Marsha: Diccon, Justin

Colleen: Lucien St. Clair. Rereading Lord & Gypsy, its is apparent that instant gratification is his motto where women are concerned. He lives with Edythe without marriage, even though it is destroying her self-esteem (I know, I know, it's Edythe's choice also, but he doesn't compare well with other PV heros in this regard). Even though he is supposed to be eaten up with remorse about Edythe, he immediately begins associating with the gypsy girl without even questioning whether the relationship that he could offer her could be positive for the girl. A little more self-restraint wouldn't hurt him any. (If Lucien DOES think about this issue, please point it out because I have missed it).

Least favorite heroine
Marsha: Deirdre Breckenridge. More of a window dressing, she irritates me immensely. It is unfair to blaim Lucian for attachment he felt before he met her. After all, he hadn't deceived Deirdre. I really wanted to shut her up!

Judy: Deirdre Breckenridge - too much game's playing.

Marie: Maria de Barthelemy - she shot the man she loves AND betrayed Zoe.

Toni: pick any of them (grrrr)

Victoria: Lizzy from Married Past Redemption, as you can see I'm not fond of those who pine after lost loves too long. :-)

Dolores: I think her name's Deirde. The gypsy from the The Lord and the Gypsy. I agree very much with whoever pointed out on the survey how very, very annoying she was blaming Lucien for things she had no right to be upset about. I thought she was a total shrew.

Laura: Thea Breckenridge and Naomi Ludenville for the same reasons: they expect their beaux to read their minds. Lucian is supposed to know that Thea loved him when she was six? Refresh my memory on when she TOLD him this? So she dresses up like a gypsy and tests him? Hmmm. Makes sense to me NOT. Susan in Logic of the Heart is ok, but gets points off for that strange hairdo! (LOL)

Kristen: I'm afraid I'll have to join the group that mislikes Deirdre Breckenridge.

Marsha: DEIRDRE!!!

Colleen: Deidre Breckinridge. Angry AND manipulative.

Favorite secondary character
Marsha: Male: Jeremy Bolster. He is the sweetest, nicest, the most decent man. He and Mandy made the "Lord and the Gypsy" worthwhile for me. And in Georgians, Thad Briley, without a doubt! My favorite part of "Journey to Enchantment" is when "the effeminate dandy" gets rid of the burly officer. And I like Jamie Morris except that last situation with August. Female: Katrina. She is very sweet. And the hilarious wonderful little Mandy.

Judy: Lt. James Morris - provides a lot of humor with his downhome sayings. Also he irritates the Mandarin.

Marie: Tummet

Toni: Guy Sanguinet

Victoria: Muffin

Michele: Jocelyn Vaughan

Dolores: Hmm, I'm not sure. Gordon Chandler, maybe.

Laura: This is impossible for me to give one answer so here are all mine: Jeremy Bolster: funny, loyal, romantic, smarter than he appears, and, like Roly, we get to know him through a couple of books. Roger Ewing: I keep hoping PV will write him a book, though since Poor Splendid Wings was published in 1992(?) I better not hold my breath. Roger is mysterious and fascinating. Also some unfinished business about the ghost or whatever he saw at Green Willow Castle.

Kristen: Gordon Chandler. I loved him as a secondary character long before he got his own book. I'm one of the quiet ones, myself, and I like that he keeps doing things that people might expect of his harum- scarum brother.

Marsha: Jeremy Bolster, Thad Briley, Mandy, Alain (in other people's books)

Favorite pet
Marsha: Rump, of course! (not that he is a pet, strictly speaking). If it has to be a pet, Jasper the canary

Judy: Apollo, dog of August Falcon. At least the dog can make his seem more human.

Marie: Being

Toni: Rumpelstiltskin

Victoria: Beast

Michele: Horatio

Dolores: The pig in Give All to Love.

Kristen: Beast. I have a friend with a Scottish Deerhound (another BIG dog) - and while Nym is still puppyish enough to be active, when he falls asleep on your feet, you're not going anywhere. I like that Beast is so fond of Roly.

Marsha: Rump (though I wouldn't call him a pet), Mrs O'Crumbs :(

Worst villain
Marsha: Brooks Lambert. I hoped they were going to hang, draw and quarter him! he was so evil, it wasn't even amusing. As Muffin said, "I wish it was possible to enfore an eye for an eye!"

Judy: And best villain. Very good looking. Can't remember his name - but in one series he is a terrible villain in the first few books and is less villainous in the last couple of books. I think he was Russian or Polish (anyway, not English). I don't mean Claude's brother.

Marie: Lord Hibbard Green (yuk)

Toni: (as in very effective or not effective??); bad: Claude Sanguinet (hmph); best villain: Roly of course!

Victoria: Lambert! Thanks to whoever suggested that

Michele: Parnell Sanguinet

Dolores: Brooks Lambert. Slime!

Kristen: The freres Sanguinet. (Not counting Guy, of course) Not only madly ambitious but cruel as well. Although this description does fit several of her villains.

Marsha: Brooksie, Claude, Smythe and Greene and dear Diabolique would compete for the second

Most touching love scene
Marsha: The one when Roland realises Fiona is sitting by his bed and tries to make her go away and then asks where she is. *gulp* Or when Mitten tells Anthony to wake up. I must like the sickness business :-) And of course August whirling Gwen about after that sortie in the park, when he thinks she's hurt in that accident: I was waiting for that moment for 6 books!

Judy: When Christopher, Lord Aynsworth discovers the truth in Mistress of Willowvale.

Marie: Gosh that's a hard one. This is probably not one of the best, but I really loved it when Perry read that poem to Zoe.

Toni: when Lisa dies in Joe's arms (Poor Splendid Wings) ... I think that is a love scene

Victoria: Mistress of Willowvale

Michele: Sanguinet's crown -- Mitchell calling for Madame Mulot when he's ill and Mitchell watching over Charity "the girl he once had judged as elegant as a grey fieldmouse"

Dolores: All of de Villars pursuit of (insert heroine's name here) in The Wagered Widow.

Kristen: Quentin and Penelope's marriage.

Most exciting danger scene
Marsha: Tony's trial from LAN, esp when Muffin shows up. For a fight: August's fight in the park, with Gwen's help or when Quentin and Roland fight.

Judy: Escaping the mercenaries in A Shadow's Bliss

Marie: A Shadow's Bliss, when they ride the "Ark" down the cliff.

Toni: end of Dedicated Villain (I dont mean the wedding)

Victoria: I can't choose, there are far too many!

Michele: There are so many great ones! The flight towards Brighton in Sanguinet's Crown, Camille and Whitthurst in the burning barn; St. Clair and Hersh's sword fight, etc.

Kristen: August Falcon in the hands of the League.

Best parent
Marie: I don't know if he's the best, but I love Neville Falcon.

Toni: Lennox Albritton

Victoria: Yolanda's parents in The Noblest Frality are very understanding

Kristen: There aren't a great many options here! Most of the wonderful relatives are aunts. I think I'll go with Sir Brian Chandler. From all accounts, he was wonderful with his sons when his poor wife died - so even if he's gotten a bit difficult because of his illness, he's still a good parent.

Worst parent
Marsha: Roland's papa takes the cake. No competition there. For a mother, August's mother wasn't much of a gift, and I would really like to box Meredith Carruthers' mother's ears

Judy: Lord Collington, father of Naomi Lutonville

Marie: Lord Collington

Toni: Octavia Thorndyke, Kit's mom

Victoria: Roland's

Dolores: Got to agree that Roland's dad took the cake.

Laura: Octavia, how can she be so obtuse? Naomi's father is the most evil, yuck! Sir Brian causes the most harm to both sons, though well meaning, but not gonna win Father of the Year from me! Nanette's step dad is the worst step parent, Claude's brother, can't remember his name.

Kristen: if we dismiss a few out-and-out villains such as Roly's father and Naomi's father, I'll vote against Lucille Carruthers. To hold it against Merry just because he looks like his father is wicked nonsense - and to idolize Jeffery is pure idiocy.

The most shocking moment
Marsha: When I realized who the Squire was. And also Amy's sauntering in the room with that jewelry during Tio's arrest.

Marie: Finding out that James Morris could walk.

Toni: When Roly is blind

Victoria: Finding out Roland's parentage

Laura: I was shocked when I realized who the villain was in Riddle, and the further revelations were shocking, too.

Kristen: The unmasking of Ruby.

Best mate choice
Marsha: Gwen and August. They are going to have quite a fun time in their marriage. :-) Second place: Roly and Fiona. (Besides the fact that I sympathise with anyone barely 5 feet tall getting a 6 foot hero.)

Marie: Katrina Falcon - James Morris would always worship her.

Toni: Roly

Victoria: Wagered Widow! I think they will have so much fun together.

Dolores: Trevelyn de Villars and his heroine, whose name escapes me at the moment.

Laura: Garrett and Mia balance each other so well. Sophia and Damon make beautiful music together. Marrietta and Diccon, just like 'em!

Kristen: I'm not even going to try to choose. Mia and Garrett, Treve and Rebecca, and August and Gwen. I think they understand each other the best and are the best balance of characteristics.

Worst mate choice
Marsha: Deirdre and Lucian. What on earth would they talk about? She really irritates me. But #1, Susan and Val. She misunderstands him and gets angree so easily. While I don't like Diccon much, he and Marietta are right together.

Marie: Sir Owen Furlong

Toni: Roly

Victoria: Lizzy/Justin He fell in love with her beauty, I can't see any other reason why he marries her, and he deserves better!

Dolores: Lucian St. Clair and what's- her-name. He deserved better. I also wasn't crazy about Fiona for Roland. I would have preferred Penelope for him, although I thought it was odd, once I got to know him, that he would try to marry her like that. I agree with whoever said that maybe PV didn't originally to intend him as a future hero or as important a character as he turned out to be.

Laura: Naomi and Gideon. Gideon, you can do better than her!

Kristen: This one's hard for me. I'm not entirely convinced about Tio and Amy - but Tio's certain enough for the both of us, so...

As on the Veryan newsletter, which hero would you like for your daughter
Marsha: Well, I don't have a daughter, but the funny thing is, that while I love August and Roly and would love them for myself, I don't think I'd want them, or Quentin or even probably Mitch and Alan, my other favorites, for them. Much nicer to have Jeremy Bolster. Funny!

Marie: Sir Brian Chandler

Toni: hero: Anthony Farrar; heroine: Gwendolyn Rossiter

Victoria: Jeremy Bolster

Dolores: Devenish, probably. Although on the principle of reformed rakes making the best husbands, both Roland and de Villars would probably do good by her.

Laura: Mike Owens is brave, sensitive, idealistic, acts on his principles, can control himself (and knows when the Time is right not to.) And a scholar and a musician. Oh yes, and tall, dark and handsome. I guess he'll do for my daughter, Madeline

Kristen: IF he could convince me that he really has turned over a new leaf - Treve de Villars. Otherwise - Sir Anthony Farrar, Alain Devenish, Sir Harry Redmond. Young men, comfortably circumstanced, amiable and/or charming with the ladies and not know as rakes.

Most upsetting moment
Marsha: When Lambert was torturing Roland. I was so mad and upset, I was really glad when PV gave us a little break by interposing this with the scene of Muffin having to recieve people.

Marie: When Roland lost his sight

Toni: Roly's torture scene and when they threaten to shoot Rump!!!

Dolores: Definitely Roland getting tortured. I could barely see the book forcrying so much.

Laura: Have to have a couple in this category, too. Torture of Roly, Mount threatens to kill Kent in front of Garret, Sanguinet whips Mitchell, and in the end of Riddle in the mine, especially when the villain shoots Jack

Kristen: the report that Rump was shot.

Most moving moment
Marsha: When Roland finds Rump again; when Gwen finds August, when the Scot (forgot his name) hits Delavale and Prue was so grieved.

Marie: When Roland got his sight back.

Toni: When Guy falls down after trying to look cool in front of Faith (Give All to Love)

Michele: Sophia lying on the couch thinking Camille was dead and Horatio trying to comfort her.

Dolores: Borrowing from someone else's survey, the moment when Roland gets Rump back. Also when he begs Ligun Doone, was it, to let his horse go when he's through with it. Finding out Roland would live.

Laura: I love this line, when Mia tells Garrett, "I will give you more sons." Also, when Roger breaks down in the bar. Honorable mention is when Tio's father is forced to agree to betray him and he kisses the glass and when Roly tells Rob of his childhood, especially about the hunt.

Kristen: August's rescue.

Funniest moment
Marsha: Ladies remarking on Charity's drinking in SC.

Marie: Gwendolyn teaching Apollo to play fetch.

Toni: Duel scenes between Roly and co. in Love Alters Not and Duel Scene between Falcon and co. in Time's Fool

Michele: Devenish and Vaughan giving Montclair a hard time at Henley's cottage in "Logic of the Heart" and Vaille and Ridgley arguing after their duel

Dolores: Roland trying to molest Dimity in Love Alters Not. He just tickles me when he's being a lout.

Laura: I hope I can do my top ten, 'cause here they are:
10. The race in Lord and the Gypsy
9. Scene on shipboard when Rob poses as a doctor
8. Roly's improvisations in the play
7. Jamie's wise sayings
6. Sampson attends the Musicale
5. Alain eats soap
4. Kit and Troy's scene in the street with the carriage
3. The duel in Love Alters Not
2. Prudence falls out of the tree
1. Tony's interrupted bath
Do you get the idea I like PV's comedy?

Kristen: out of so many? I'm especially found of Mia's "luring" of Garrett with all those jewels and the queue to challenge Lord Fontaine in Give All to Love.

Best friendship moment (not love)
Marsha: In "Give all to love" when the members of the "9" all line up to insult the slimeball that told nasty stuff about Alain. It gives me sort of a really good feeling to read it, besides being one of my favorite moments: arguing over who's going to insult the slimeball first and discussing his deficiencies.

Toni: When Guy took a bullet for Tristan.

Laura: Garrett and his neighbor make up and go look for Kent. Also, Mike and Roger forge a friendship in the air.

Kristen: In The Lord and the Gypsy, when St. Clair choses to alienate Vaughn and be named Moulton heir so as to become the target for the assassin. And in Give All for Love, when the Nine watch Devenish' meeting with the Chevalier - more like family than friends.
