Here's Laura B. with the answers...
First of all, I congratulate those who have taken and passed the Veryan GRE. Due to problems in the scoring mechanism (me!) one of the answers was not given as a correct choice. OOOOPPPPPSSSS! What are you all going to do with me? Whatever you do, don't take Roly away from me forever. That'll teach me to goof up. (Those of you who keep track of things realize that this is a Brer Rabbit comment--"Don't throw me in that briar patch!")
Number One: The correct answer of course, given already my dear, dear, 'tutees' is: c) Mitten
Hmmm....auGust: Gwen -- the first letter of the second name is the third letter of the first nameThe third letter of "jaMie is M, therefore, the correct answer is Mitten. (do you see why many GRE takers emerge shaky, with sweaty palms--THREE, (count 'em, 1-2-3!) hours of this stuff. Fortunately I loved every minute of it. (hehehehe)
Number Two: The correc answers are b) 225 guineas and (there should have been an: e) not given or e) 325 guineas.) Thanks to those who actually figured this out better than I.
OK, here's my reasoning: The bay was 100 guineas. 450% of this is 450 guineas for the two horses combined. A price ratio of the CH: B at 4:5 makes the chestnut 200 guineas, and the black 250 guineas. 90% of 250=225 guineas. The bay was sold for 100. (+100). The black and chestnut sold for 450 (+550 total). The two-sock bay was purchased for 225 (-225), making the total for the day, 325 guineas profit. So you two are absolutely correct, and I was too tired when I wrote this, because I somehow borrowed from the 5 (hundreds column). If you took this to the GRE people, I'm sure they'd up your score. Mind you, that was my lowest score (though still quite respectable, I'll have you know)--and I've had a problem keeping details straight anywhere lately.
Testing for this quarter is now completed.
