Characters (In Order of Appearance)
- Miss Anne Tillbury
- 25 year old spinster governess. Brown eyes, chestnut hair, slender yet nicely curved figure. Pleasant features. Low, distinctive voice. Notoriously vivid imagination (according to Lady Brookfield). Lacks decorum (according to Phipps.) Usually knows what to do - has good governessy tone of voice. Anne has just run into Theo while escaping from the coach.(4/8) Anne has a sister. The last time se was knocked unconscious was when she accepted her sister's dare to ride their father's prize horse. She failed. She still has the sapphire.(4/12) She's writing a novel.(4/12) Her loving parents considered her amber-flecked brown eyes her best feature.(4/12) Her parents died of a fever in India.(4/12) Anne's Uncle is Sir Paul Tilbury - a rich hunting man with estates in India. He was the one who recommended her to the Brookfields. He considers her father to have been "a disgraced fortune-hunter." (4/16) Anne decides during the carriage ride to return the sapphire to the Marquis. (4/16)
- Flora Havershaw
- 20. Brilliant blue eyes, blonde curls, creamy complexion. Beautiful, expensive habit. Gives Anne a sapphire belonging to her -? Impulsive, romantical, talkative. (Aunt Flora - deceased. Cousin Louise - fond of Cervantes - rich.)
- Theo Havershaw
- fair-haired, blue-eyed like his sister. A well-turned calf and a good turn of speed. Formerly heir to his father the marquis, now declared illegitimate. Attempting to reform his frivolous nature into a more sober, thoughtful one. (So far, it's not working.) (4/6) Anne considers him an Adonis - with a bad habit of calling her "ma'am" and thinks he's a few years younger than herself. (4/12) Theo mentions that this is a matter of national security - and calls the stone an emerald. He says he must have it back by Sunday or "there'll be the devil to pay."(4/12) Resides at No 8 Berkeley Square.
- Miss Rossiter and Mr. Falcon.
- Miss Rossiter gave Anne her calling card.
- Balder
- part Great Dane, part Irish wolfhound, part klutz. Belongs to the Havershaws.
- Ronnie Brookfield
- golden hair, stammer. Do not be fooled by the angelic exterior!
- Phipps
- butler to the Brookfields. Short, portly, and tyrannical.
- Lady Brookfield
- the "dragon" specializes in malicious gossip. Easily cowed by noblemen. Can be carelessly kind (to Flora, at least.) Is better than Anne's other employers. Resides at No. 3 Grosvenor Square. (4/12) Has a barely fashionable grasp of French. (4/12) Lady Brookfield is in hysterics when Anne and the marquis return to the house, accusing Anne of endangering Ronnie, and ordering her from the house or be sent to prison. (4/16)
- The Wicked Marquis
- James Havershaw, Marquis of Seaforth, the Havershaws' Uncle James, he inherited the title when they were declared illegitimate. A handsome man, given to flushing bright red. Capable of fisticuffs. Currently suffering from a gunshot wound. (4/4) Was leafing through "Moral Values and the Beneficial Effect Said to Be Held By Them Over the Health of the Human Body" by the Reverend Mr. Doolittle while waiting to interview Anne in the Yellow Salon. (4/12) Slightly above middle height, with broad shoulders,well-muscled calves and a slim waist, dark curly hair that resists taming, and long grey eyes. Is accustomed to the effect his looks have on susceptible females. Has a sense of humor.(4/12) He tells Anne that he's involved in "a crucial task for his majesty's government" and that her refusal to share what she knows is dangerous. When Lady Brookfield comes into the Yellow Salon, and decides to stay as chaperon, he whisks Anne away for a carriage ride.(4/14) Anne puts his age at 30 or 31.(4/16) His wound is perhaps more serious than the graze or scratch he admits to.(4/16)
- Three masked intruders
- One growls. The second says Pip, Pip in a high voice, is too free with his pistol, and doesn't mind hitting females. The third is silent. Proven to be Cockney. The largest one is now shot (4/8)
- Martin
- Theo's groom/manservant. Morpheus and Slumbery are the horses.
- Lord Daventry
- David was Theo's closest friend, and is Flora's beau (true love? Who knows - yet.) Has an estate east of London.
- Mrs. Coopersmith
- Lady Brookfield's housekeeper - skinny but effective
- The Star of the Sea
- the sapphire. Last seen in Anne's possession. (4/2) Still in Anne's possession after her abduction and rescue. (4/12) She secured it in the pocket of her favorite green dress before going to sleep. (4/12) She's inspecting it when Bastet arrives and startles her. (4/12)
- The Star of the Sea
- the emerald. Theo tells Anne it's been in the family since Richard the Lionheart gave it to the family for their part in the Crusades. (Perhaps a less than convincing delivery.) (4/12) The stone that Theo is talking about is an emerald. (4/12)
- The Guardians
- if the sapphire is discovered missing, the Guardians will kill them all, according to Uncle James (4/10)
- Bastet and Boadicea
- large, regal, yellow-eyed black cats who honor Anne with their attentions.
