The first film that I viewed was a Walk in The Clouds which is romantic story. This film takes after World War II in 1945. A Walk in the Clouds takes place in Napa Valley, California on a Vineyard. A Walk in the Clouds stars Keanu Reeves as the main character Paul Sutton. Antana Sanchez-Gijon plays as Victoria Aragon which is the main lady.
Paul Sutton whom is a soldier returning home from the war he had a wife that he expected to welcome him home but this did not happen she was not there to welcome him home. Paul decided to go north for work and on his way while on a bus he meets Victoria Aragon. Victoria Aragon is a pregnant woman whom is on her way home from college to the Napa Valley Vineyard that her family owned. While off at College she had an affair with a professor whom got her pregnant. She was worried to go home because of the shame she was bringing the family. She thought that they would disown her. Paul Sutton goes home with Victoria and pretends to be her husband this way thing would be ok with the family. Although to their surprise when Victoria Aragon’s father Alberto Aragon played by Giancarlo Giannini is angered by the situation of Victoria’s marriage. Victoria’s father Alberto Aragon is angry that Victoria has married outside of her heritage. Although the rest of Victoria’s family is happy for her and likes Paul. Paul was only supposed to stay for one night with Victoria however when he goes to leave the next morning Victoria’s grandfather played by Anthony Quinn persuades Paul to stay for the harvesting of the grapes. Victoria and Paul begin to fall in love with one another. But Paul remembers that he has left his wife at home and goes back to her. When he gets there he learns that she has been cheating on him and is having their marriage annulled. Paul then returns to the vineyard to share the news with Victoria. Meanwhile Victoria’s father has found out that there marriage is not real. Victoria’s father is angry and upset and wants Paul to leave in the rage the Vineyard burns down and everything is ruined. Victoria’s father ends up liking Paul in the end.
Paul (protagonist) because he tries to help out of the kindness of his heart and gets caught up in Alberto Aragon (antagonist) rage of not accepting interracial marriage by his daughter. This was a good movie to watch with a good story line and I would rate it a 4.
The second film that I watched was Amores Perros which is a foreign film which is a thriller/Drama. Amores Perros is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and written by Guillermo Arriaga. Amores Perros takes place in Mexico and shows scenes of three different peoples lives that all interlinked in some way. Throughout the film they go back and forth to the different peoples lives showing the regret loss and realities of these people’s lives. This film shows the darker sides of the lives of everyday people living in Mexico City.
The first family that is shown is of a family consisting of a woman named Susana played by Vanessa Bauche and her husband Ramiro played by Marco Perez. The live with Ramiro’s Mother played by Adriana Barraza and Ramiro’s brother Octavio played by Gael Garcia Berna. Ramiro and Susana have a son together although Ramiro treats Susana badly. The brother Octavio likes Susana and wants to escape out of Mexico City with her. Octavio decides to fight the family dog a rottwiler named Cofi for money after the dog getting loose and killing another dog. He goes through with it and ends up making a lot of money giving it to Susana for their plan to escape together. Octavio and his brother Ramiro aren’t the best of friends and Octavio they have a run in at the store that Ramiro works at then Octavio has someone people beat up his brother. One night when Octavio comes home his brother and Susana are gone and so is the money he had been giving her.
The second family shown is A blond supermodel named Valeria played by Goya Toledo who is together with a married magazine editor Daniel played by Alvaro Guerrero. They live in a home together with Valeria’s dog. Valeria is on the cover of a magazine.
The lives of these families are tied together by a car accident that takes place. One evening Octavio is fighting Cofi for 40,000 dollars a big fight and Cofi is winning the owner of the dog that is fighting Cofi is loosing and the owner puts a bullet in Cofi. Mad about this was Octavio and he stabs the man. Octavio and his friend along with the dog get in the car and leave the other guys are chasing them and Octavio wrecks the car he hits Valeria in this accident. A homeless man El Chivo played by Emilio Echevarria picks up Cofi and takes him home. Valeria has hurt her leg very bad and Octavio’s friend died during the accident.
El Chivo has lots of dogs at his home and is a former hit man whom recently got out of prison. Once he has nursed Cofi to health he leaves the dog alone along with the other dogs while he goes out he comes home to all of his dogs being killed by Cofi. This changes El Chivo’s outlook on life and killing people. He is offered a hit man job and actually does not go through with it. He has a daughter that he has not seen in a long time she was actually told he was dead when he went off to prison. He cleans him self up and goes to her home and leaves her some money and a message.
At the end of the film Octavio meets back up with Susana at his brother Ramiro’s funeral Ramiro was killed. As for Valeria due to the damage of her leg it had to be amputated and she could no longer model.
This was a great film showing the realities of people’s lives I rate it a 5.
As for these two films relating to the Freire perspective I would say that a Walk in the Clouds and Amores Perros relates to Freire’s perspectives on family and culture being very important. Freire’s perspective of oppressed can kind of relate to the character of Susana in the film Amores Perros because her voice is not heard by her husband Ramiro.
