RARE CAT FOUND WOUNDED ON PATIO

by Mariana Malan

A rare, pure bred Tonkinese of Loevenstein in Bellville was shot with a pellet gun this past week and wounded in the chest. His owner, Jeanine Grobbelaar of Eksteen Street, found the cat after work on the patio with blood on his chest after looking for him for hours. According to Grobbelaar she locks in her cats at night in the house so that they cannot roam. They are however allowed outside during the day, and the incident occured during the day. She reported the case to the Police, who told her that it is illegal to even fire a pellet gun in a residential area. The police consider cases like this in a very serious matter and are investigating the case. The cat that was wounded, is called 2PAC, and is one of less than a hundred Tonkinese in South Africa. The breed is not yet officially registered locally and is a Burmese and Siamese hybrid. This cat is found in the wild in Vietnam and is already very popular worldwide. According to Grobbelaar they are at present working to have the breed registered locally. The bullet that hit 2PAC, is still lodged in his ribcage. She assumes that he is in a lot of pain as it presses on a nerve. The cat at present only wants to eat soft food. She at first thought that the cat was hit by a car, but the real reason was only found out after x-rays were taken. Grobbelaar has six cats - three "ordinary house cats" and three pure-bred pedigreed animals. She is afraid that the incident might happen again and is asking inhabitants in the neighbourhood to report suspicious actions at the Bellville Police Station.

TONKINESE "IMMIGRANTS" MAKE NEST IN TYGERBERG BELLVILLE

By Mariana Malan

Two Australians with mile long pedigrees are busy settling in in the Tygerberg. Their arrival has caused so much interest amongst cat lovers that there is already a waiting list for their future litters - more than a year before this happening (occurence - choose please). The owner of the Tonkinese Loral Wujar Gundaya (a blue male) and Loral Yamani Jeju (a chocolate coloured female), is Jeanine Grobbelaar of Loevenstein in Bellville. She imported the cats from the breeders Loris and Allan Kerslake of Brisbane. Loris bred the Australian champion Tonkinese two years running. There is according to Grobbelaar at present a worldwide "renewal" of the Tonkinese bered. The cats originate from a crossing between a Burmese and a Siamese. Tonkinese have just been accepted by the South African Cat Countil as breed and Grobbelaar's cats will be seen in March next year for the first time at a official cat show. This show will be held in Durbanville. They will be able to reach championship status within a year. Grobbelaar said she was at one stage very worried about her cats. They travelled five days before reaching her. She did however say that it doesn't look as if Yamani (an Australian Aboriginal name meaning "rainbow serpent of the earth) and Wujar "Mist python") suffered any negative results after their trip.

CLASSROOM CAPERS!!!

My cousin's 8-year old girl, Courtney's class had their first oral -topic - CATS - big or domestic cats, and for Courtney it could only be Tonkinese, NOTHING else. She did a lot of work, I provided all the photos and info, she made a very nice poster. I then today took Wudi, Yamani and Stormie to her school. What fun they (the children) had - ok and me. She gave her talk - did very well (phoned me tonight to say she got 100%). I was then presented with a pretty package with bubble bath "as you said you and the cats enjoy bubble bath" - she chose "aqua" scented - go go with the cats' eyes. Here is the note she wrote me (as is - spelling)

"Dear Nini Thank yoy for helping me with my poster. Thank you for comeing to myclass to show them some of your beautiful Tonkinese and enjoy this gift with your cats. Lots of LOVE The Tonkinese Girl"

It was SO sweet the entire experience - I took along a bottle of disinfectant - Courtney sprayed all their hands, they then had to line up to take turns to touch the cats. I had to laugh it was so funny - there all 20 were, taking turns quickly touching one, then going to the back of the line.
