Sea angling around Alnmouth
Alnmouth estuary is one of my lazy fishing spots. Again there are a number of marks to keep you coming back. As soon as you drive over the bridge over the Aln park up and walk down the stairs on the south side of the bridge. This stretch of river is good for flounders although the use of a spoon is not recommended due to a rocky bottom in places. It is best fished using a bubble float with the bait just tripping the bottom at low tide or a static ledger at high. I've seen a fair number of sea-trout jump in this area particularly at the sharp bend a little further down stream in late summer early autumn. A local angler tells me that they seem fascinated by flounder spoons although I've not witnessed this. The mouth of the river has a fast current so use gripleads when fishing here, weed coming in can make it unfishable so avoid after a good sea. Again the main sport is flounders with some bass reported, probably chasing the sandeels that get swept up river. When fishing here park on the road that runs parallel to the river. Marden rocks offer good kelp beds and Fluke Hole at the North end is popular if you don't mind the walk. Fluke hole fishes best on the ebb with a SE wind blowing. Nearby Foxton beach can fish at either side of high tide when there is a good depth of water in (the ebb is normally better), although flatties are all you can expect for the water is quite shallow. For Foxton beach head towards Boulmer and look for a turn off on the right and fish directly infront of the steps, there are loads of lugworm casts here. To fish off the rocks save your legs and park in the carpark (sadly it'll cost you a £1 and you'll have to avoid lowflying golf balls). The river bends round in front of this carpark, fishing where the large concrete blocks are can also produce the goods.
