Who is able to reserve time and space at the center?
Faculty only.  Reservations are handled through the Centers coordinator Marilyn Ulrich.  Refer all inquires in regard to this to her.
 
 

What is the log on password to at startup for all machines?
Nothing.  Try to ENTER past this dialog box.  If this fails, CANCEL the dialog box.
Startup should then proceed as normal.
 
 

How do I find out what software is available on which computers?
-Macs: Select macintosh HD in the upper right hand corner of the screen which will allow you to see a list of all software installed on the machine.
-PCs: Click the start button in the  lower left-hand corner of the screen and go to programs.  YOu will find most of the software for the machine here.
 
 

How do I find out the IP address for a computer?
For Dells and Profiles go to RUN off of the START menu and type in “winipcfg”  From the drop down menu, select “3Com Ether net”  this will list the machine’s IP.
For G4s and iMacs:
 
 

I've been attempting to log on to mygateway for awhile now but it will not let me in.  What's going on?
It could be anything but it might be useful to log on to www.umsl.edu/bb to see if that aspect of UMSL’s system is down.

The monitor of a Dell machine has a chalky or hazy appearance.  What’s wrong with it?
It is hard to say precisely what caused this but the remedy is simple.  Toward the lower left of the monitors casing there is an inset button.  Press this button with your fingernail or a small object to degauss the screen.  This should remedy the problem.
 
 

What types of computers are used in the TLC?

How do I find out what equipment is available for reserve through the center?
Located in the back of the TLC in Joanie's office is where you can see whether or not equipment is in use or reserved.
 
 
 

Who is allowed to checkout the Center's hardware/software?
Faculty only, given proper reservation of resources through the center's Technical Specialist.  Students may gain access to the center's resources only given a faculty member's proper reservation.
 

What special technologies are offered through the center?
Available on the floor:
2 HP Scanners available on either Mac or PC platforms
2 internal CD writers (CD-RW) on PC platforms
2 external CD writers on Mac platforms
2 Smart Boards available for presentations
250 M Zip drives installed on all Dells
120 M Super disks installed on all G4s and iMacs
100 M Zip drives installed on 12 Gateway Profiles

Who is allowed to use the Center?
At the present date, all are allowed to use the center.  However, it is important to note that there is a fairly formalized priority system which informs allocation of resources: 1) Faculty 2) Students 3) All Others.  It is expected that as the Center's traffic increases, availability will become increasingly exclusive.
 
 

Where does the Center get its funding?
Major contributors include E. Desmond Lee for whom the center is named, Jack Taylor for whom the Gateway lab is named, and of course UMSL’s own budgeted funding.  Other contributions are garnered via sundry grants, federal and private.
 
 

What is the difference between Support Staff and Graduate Assistants?
Essentially Graduate Assistants have a specialized range of responsibilities whereas the Support Staff members are typically undergraduates that assist primarily on the floor among other projects and responsibilities
 
 

How fast is the Center's Internet connection?
Many computers such as those in the Gateway lab run on a 10-meg/sec connection.  Others, the majority in the main area, run on a 100-meg/sec connection.
 
 
 

When did the Center open?
Opening Day: April 7th, 1999
Grand Opening: April 14th, 1999
 
 

What did the TLC used to be before it was renovated?
Originally it used to be a sanctuary, as is evidenced by the altar at the back of the center and the embracing design of the ceiling.  After being “de-sanctified” it was later used as a health library and for a period of time as an auditorium.
