Journal 3

The Key Idea of Section Three.
The main idea or subject of this section is Reason. This section has four main supporting ideas: 3 Kinds of Knowledge, 5 Common Thinking Errors, 5 Steps to Critical Thinking, and the Process of Reasoning. We can reason but it is tough because we are humans and we make mistakes. If we notice the 5 Common Thinking errors, use the 5 Steps to Critical Thinking, then follow the Process of Reasoning, then we can reason logically instead of just thinking.

Three Important ideas from this section that I most want to remember.
1. I want to remember the Five Common Thinking Errors. (Non Sequitur, False and Vague Premises, Ad Hominem, Begging the Question, Red Herring) I believe that now that I know what these common errors are, I can think about them when I am making decisions and in the future I will make better decisions for myself.

2. The video "What the Bleep Do We Know" was a very important part of this section because it reenforced what I learned from Reasoning. I learned that there are lots of possibilities. At first we can not see all the possibilities and that is where Reason comes in. With Reason we can see all of the possibilities and we will not be in ignorance, just like in Plato's Allegory of the Cave.

3. I want to remember the difference Aristotle discusses between wants versus needs. We have a confusion between wants and needs and that is why we cannot find true happiness. We always know what we want but we do not always know what we need. We do not always seek what we need, but if we want to find happiness we need to seek what is truly good for us (bodily goods, external goods, and goods of the soul).
