5Newspaper Obituary of Jack Graham. "Newspaper Cutting DEATH OF MR JACK GRAHAM FORMER WELL KNOWN LICENSEE Mr Jack F Graham of Sunshine, 32 Wellesley Road, Clacton and formerly licensee of the Carlton Hotel Clacton who died suddenly on Saturday had been for 26 years secretary to the Mayors of the City of Westminster. In the later years of that period he was hon. secretary of the Metropolitan Mayors Association. The news of his passing was received with much regret by his former colleagues on the staff of the Westminster City Council and the many friends he made both in the City of Westminster and London generally, during the 41 years of his service with that body. His retirement in October 1931, at the age of 62, owing to failing health was noted with regret in Westminster and throughout the 27 Metropolitan boroughts. UNFAILING COURTESY His long experience in Mayoral duties and functions and all matters of procedure, and his ability and unfailing courtesy were second only to the record of the late Sir William Soulsby, the doyen of Mayoral secretaries, who retired about the same time from the Corporation of Lond. Mr Graham had endeared himself to all his colleagues by his good nature and his readinesss to help anyone in trouble without thought of repayment or reward. Among his many duties during the Great War it may be mentioned that it fell to him to receive, and obtain and assign accommodation for the thousands of Belgian and other regugees who arrive in London via Victoria and Charing Cross stations. He never once failed in accommodating the huge arrivals of helpless men, women and children, at all hours of the day and night. On his retirement, besides receiving the thanks of the City Council and a presentation subscribed for by past Mayors of the City of Westminster. Mr Graham came to reside at Clacton in June, 1930, and from that year until May last year he was licensee of the Carlton Hotel, Rosemary Road, Clacton. At one time, Mr Graham was hon secretary of the Walton and Frinton Lifeboat Committee and he was founder of the Nimble Nine Club, which comprised season ticket holders who travelled from Clacton to London each day. His first wife died in 1907 and he married again in 1934. He leaves a widow and two daughters, Mrs. C. Boreham and Mrs Treneary who is in India.".
