IF YOU WERE IN MY WHEELCHAIR

  Dear Sir or Madam:

I have been a paraplegic since I was a teenager. I live alone in an independent living apartment and am responsible for all my household expense. I work part-time for the Ministry of Education as a switchboard operator and have held this position for over 20 years

  I am seeking financial assistance for the purchasing of a wheelchair accessible minivan for my personal transportation. My car is 15 years old and needs to be replaced very soon.

The van would allow me to be more independent then I presently am. I would be able to embark and disembark without assistance from others. Presently every time I leave home I require assistance to get in my car and to have my wheelchair put in the back of my car. When I need to get out of my car the same type of assistance is needed.

Many times the readily assistance that I need is not available and I have to wait until someone is able to come and assist me. I have had to call friend and family members from their jobs and homes to request assistance from them to get in or out of my car. I am often subject to the rain and heat while waiting.

. While I am grateful for the assistance of family and friends, with this new vehicle I will be able to be more independent and better able to keep appointments. Presently this is not always possible having to be dependant on others.
