On August 22, 1963 Myra Ellen Amos (Tori's given name) was born in Newton, North Carolina, the daughter of a strict Christian reverend. At two and a half, she began playin piano and by the time she was 5 she could play by ear. At the age of six, Tori became the youngest ever to be accepted into the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Rapidly learning to conduct and write her own pieces, by age eleven, her piano compositions had become so radical, she was expelled from the Conservatory. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Amos began playing piano in bars as early as 13 years old. Her first success came at 17 when she and her brother won a songwriting contest sponsored by the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. Her first ever recording was the song that won the contest, "Baltimore," in 1980. Around the same time, Myra Ellen adopted the nickname Tori, given by her friend's boyfriend because she "looked like a Tori." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

At age 21, Amos decided to try out a professional career in Los Angeles. She joined a rock band called Y Kant Tori Read, which was soon signed. They released one self titled album. After the first album failed, Tori decided to go solo. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Tori began to write very personal songs, including Me and a Gun, for her 1991 solo debut, Little Earthquakes. Her record label decided that she should try her music out in Europe before the US, so she moved to London. The album was a success in England, and later the US. Tori followed up the debut with 1994's Under The Pink. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In 1996, she released Boys For Pele. While touring in support of the album, Amos suffered a miscarriage, which inspired songs for the follow-up album, From the Choirgirl Hotel. In 1998 Tori married her sound engineer, Mark Hawley. In 1999, Tori released a double album, To Venus and Back, which included an album of live tracks and an album of new material. On September 5, 2000 Tori gave birth to a baby girl, Natashya Lorien. On September 18, 2001 Tori release her 6th album, Strange Little Girl. It is an album of cover songs originaly writen and performed by men, but sung from a the perspective of 13 female characters. |
