...///~~~~ FLY ~~~~\\\...

Passionate covers of the best rock and indie songs from the sixties to today

HOMEPAGESONG-LISTABOUT-USGIG-DIARYFLY-STORYTOP-LINKS

Fly is a covers band; although we also have a few songs of our own which are so good that you might find yourself wondering which band did the original! We cover songs from the sixties to the present day.
For a song to get into our set it should be (broadly speaking) ROCK. The members of the band have to like it, and we prefer to do stuff that is not too obvious. (So no Mustang Sally then...)
We have been together for about a year learning and fine tuning a set of songs so that we are ready to gig to our satisfation and yours for around 1½ to 2 hours.
This is a list of the songs that we currently do. It is allways being added to and changed as we see fit and the list you see is unlikely to be correct as I don't spend as much time on this site as I do in rehearsals!

Who are Fly? (About us)
Obviously we should have some pictures here of the band but that will have to follow later.
We are a four piece band consisiting of,

DRUMS    :   JOE

BASS        :   DAVE

GUITAR   :   PAUL

VOCALS  :   OLLI

   Joe
can also play guitar and bass but decided to concentrate on drums to keep the band going. Drummers are usually the hardest band members to find. He also does some backing vocals when needed so he is an all rounder. It is handy to have a drummer who is sensitive to the needs of the guitarists as well, they do spend a lot of time in rehearsal witterring on about chord sequences and it can get a bit boring!

Dave is a good solid bassist with all the qualities you want. Good rhythm, musical understanding, quick at picking up new songs and he never gets between a spotlight and the singer!!!

Paul is the lynchpin, the keystone, the main man, he holds it all together both musically and organisationally. Put simply; without him there would be no band. Also he plays a mean guitar!

Olli is a versatile singer but too old for pop idol.... just! He wouldn't go on it anyway but it is a bit ridiculous that there is an upper age limit of thirty when Tina Turner is in her fifties and Mick Jagger is in his... how old is mick Jagger. Anyway I digress; Olli has a vocal range of three and a half octaves and the band are happy not to have to change key from the original in any song. Even the Darkness number!

The story so far
Fly has been going for some years in various forms. Olli joined the band early in 2003 and the long slog of getting up to a full set began. (Olli knew lots of songs from previous bands but very few that were in the set of Fly)
The name came about by accident. We had let down a rehearsal studio once before and hadn't thought we would use them again so we never got around to paying the cancellation. Then one day we decided to try the studio again and when it came to booking the slot, whoever was booking us had to give a name. He didn't want to use the old name we had used in case it rang bells with the studio and he had to think of something quickly. A fly was buzzing around and annoying him so he decided to use the name "FLY". Like so many other names it is just as good or bad as any other so we stuck with it.

Some useful links
Search for live music venues and bands by county. Links given where known.
Useful site with searchable database of bands and venues.
Classified ads section for new band members and musical instruments etc.
Bands register for this database and people can search to find the right band for their wedding party etc. There are also many pubs registered here so bands can try to book gigs.
If you like a good pint and to sing along with some guy knocking out his version of "dirty old town" on an acoustic with a busted string, then this is the site for you. This site is about LIVE MUSIC in LOCAL pubs, NOT big names in big venue's.

Looks as if this site is mainly for people North of the border.
It's only rock venues but I like it. Could be a very usefull site but more for originals I think.
Another large database of gigs bands and venues
Searchable database of venues and also bands all over the uk
Raw Nerve will review pretty much anything you do. It is run by music lovers for music lovers and will give an honest opinion on your demo gig etc. A brilliant resourse for originals bands (rather than covers).

Orange and Blue promotions

Promotions company for heavy alternative bands. Run by musicians for musicians set up to get gigs for themselves it has grown beyond all expectations in a very short time. They also sell c.d.s for the bands on their roster.

Genin music

Genin is a record company set up at the end of 2003 specifically to release Djevara's debut album. It is widely expected to become the next "Sub Pop" or "Rough trade". It is run by Musicians for musicians so you wont get ripped off by them.

Recommended listening.

Djevara.

Raging alternative rock from four highly political and talented musicians.
Debut album released 02.02.2004 Funded by the fans to the tune of £15,000.
Not for the faint hearted, ideal for RATM fans getting withdrawal symptoms

Led Zep Too

As the name suggests this is a Led Zeppelin tribute group.
They have only been together for a year or so and played their first gig at the Red Lion, in High Wycombe on 17th July.
It was a barnstormer. Ask the locals or the landlady for a review. You will want to catch these guys!

Bushbaby

A terrific mix of grunge, metal and pop punk. Loud melodic and radio freindly.
And Basher is a really nice guy who takes the time to listen to others.
Some good downloads of some of their songs. This band could go far.

Brody

The lead singer of this Leeds based band has the most powerful voice I have ever heard.
And believe me mine is powerful!
But power is nothing without control and this band knows about music.

Seven Law

I saw this band playing a promotional ummmm... gig?
Well put it this way, they had set up their kit on the back of a flatbed lorry and drove it to various places. I saw them outside MTV in Camden.
A few minutes after I had said hello and taken a card from them; I got a job to pick up, none other than Sue Whitehouse, The Darkness' manager. After I told her about them she took the card from me and later got in touch.
Well... I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them. Check them out before they hit the big time. You can say you were there from the start!

F.U.L.C

This band's debut album is still available from amazon.
It is called "Biting insomnia" and it is sure not a cure for sleeplessness. Inventive musical LOUD punky and a bit metal... ah, visit the website hear for yourself.
