1. Defrag once a month ( some do this weekly - some even daily up to you- toppy)

2. Set recycle bin to a resasonable amount.. as default it is 10 percent of your hd.. which is excessive on a 300 gig hd… right click select properties and move the slider.

3. Set restore to a sensible amount ..as default it is like 10-12 percent of your entire drive.. on big drives. ….

4. Reduce startup time on some systems by going to start control panel – system - advanced and performance settings.. change time to display operationg system and time to display recovery options.. default is 30 seconds 15 or 10 is adequate and can save you 30 secs on startup time.

5. In internet explorer go to tools internet options and general tab. Select settings and turn the option to check for newer versions of pages to never. Then just use refresh page occasionally .. this can speed up web page surfing considerably and most pages don’t update that often.

6 On xp windows tends to manage memory pretty well. Don’t change it to custom unless you have over 2 gigs of ram as it realy does not make much diff on xp.. older systems it did.

7.Your pc uses hd space to store system settings etc.. if your hd is nearly full it will struggle.. so clear off some unwanted junk such as films..burn them to removable disk etc.

8 Turning off windows themes save 30 meg of memory… most ppl like xp themes though… eyecandy whores I call them.                                                          (Gripejuice aka Gully)

I strongly urge you download and install both of
the programs listed below -
run them alternatately at least once a week -
more often if you are a heavy user.
Be sure to keep them updated - as new updates arrive sometimes daily, the updating feature is visible on both programs when you run them.

For Advanced Users :

Prevention is better than the cure, they say, and it can also be applied to preventing spyware and adware from infecting your computer IN THE FIRST PLACE. Not a lot of people know this particular technique, but it will definitely save you from tons of headache you might get in the long run.
