| The Vital Self by Marjorie Holmes Listen, Lord, please listen... This woman is in a state of depression that is almost suicidal because her lover has left her. Help her, comfort her, but oh, shake some sense into her too. Make her realize that life still has significance. Self still has significance. I don't thnk you meant any of us to become that immersed in another human being, whether it be husband, wife, lover, parent or child. It devalues the precious self that you created. It even devalues the other person, for it imposes too grave a burden. It makes him nothing but the bearer, supporter and source of comfort and identity for oneself. Lord give my friend the strengh to stand up and reclaim herself as a person. Her own vital dignity and individuality. As for me, when I ask, "Who am I?" don't let the answer ever depend on somebody else |
