About the Blue Jays

A drunken Bluejay

The Topsfield Blue Jays are one of eight teams entered in the men's adult (over 30 years of age) slow-pitch softball league in Topsfield, MA. The teams are (in descending order of the number of wins since their inception):

Senators
Yankees
Clouters
Pirates
Tigers
Indians
Red Sox
Blue Jays

Most of the Blue Jays players are well over 30 years old but they display a maturity level well below that age. Individually, they are mild mannered, polite and considerate. As a group, they are rude, boisterous and sophomoric.

League rules have been written expressly to favor the Blue Jays. Teams use their own players to umpire the bases (Bluejays never make a call to hurt their team). Balls and strikes are not called so Blue Jay batters can wait for the "perfect pitch" (they seldom do). Pinch runners are allowed so the Bluejays can substitute for lame players (used often). The "slaughter rule" prohibits opponents from scoring more than seven runs against the Blue Jays in one inning (very handy). And they still can't win.

Although the Blue Jays seldom emerge victorious, they are dedicated to improving their softball skills and they constantly seek ways to upgrade their abilities. To that end, they conduct a meeting after every game in which the outcome is analyzed, key situations reviewed, and each player's performance critically reconstructed.

A secondary purpose for holding the meeting is to allow the Bluejays to have a cold one, or two (or ten) and to feed their faces. These important meetings are also referred to as "post-game parties". The Bluejays have been accused of being more interested in post-game activities than in the actual competition. They deny this vociferously at every post-game party.

The Bluejays voluntarily participate in a rigorous and strict training program during the offseason. The regimen consists of exercises to keep elbows and wrists supple and strong. This is usually accomplished by pumping aluminum at home or at the nearest pub (Rico's/466).

By day, and off the softball field, the Bluejays are successful in their chosen occupations as doctors, lawyers, Indian Chiefs, educators, entrepeneurs, executives and businessmen. Some people say they are outstanding in their fields. But when they put on the Blue Jays uniform they are transformed into bumbling, blundering bozos. Their lack of success on the softball field is legendary. However, their attitude remains unphased for they know there will always be another post-game party.
