| Duke roger of Conte was introduced in the Song of the Lioness Quartet. He is cousin to Prince Jonathan and nephew to the royal couple. He is first spoken of when the Sweating Sickness struck Tortall. His vast magical Gift would have been appreciated to help fight the disease, but he was away in Carthak. **cough cough** When he first arrives, Alanna feels compelled to dislike the charmingly hansome duke, though she does not know why. She suspects him for foul-play from the start, but only told Jonathan once, because she never had proof to back her suspitions. Duke Roger is a traitor. His attempts to kill Jonathan and the Royal family are thwarted by "Alan", whom he thought was just going to be a pawn is his grand scheme to become ruler of Tortall. Alanna had realized this, and, with many attempts at her life, never tells any one who could help. She goes on and on about the need of proof, which gets really annoying. In the end, Alanna searches his chambers and finds enough proof to tell the king that Roger was trying to take over. Roger demands trial by combat, and after cheating by using magic, is killed by Alanna. Then Alanna's twin, Thom, decides to save his pride by bringing Roger back from the dead. Roger had probably lost a bit of his sanity while being dead, and tries to destroy Tortall in a huge earthquake on the day of Jon's coronation. Jon stopped the earthquake by using the Dominion Jewel, and Alanna killed him again. As far as we know he's still dead... |
