D.A.W.N. - responses to the 2007 budget |
Dear Members - I am a Community Legal Worker with Flemingdon Community Legal Services (Don Mills and Lawrence area) and recently we have seen a trend in our catchment area with landlords installing the new Smart Meters. Smart Meters will monitor hydro use in individual apartments and then each rental unit will be required to pay their own hydro. I am interested in finding out what information landlords are telling tenants on fixed incomes about the Smart Meters. Has there been any consideration for tenants who are on fixed incomes (disability or seniors)? Many people on fixed incomes are in their apartments for longer hours and/or require a higher heat level - this may incur a higher hydro charge than someone who is out of the apartment for 10 to 12 hours. Has anyone raised these concerns at any of the Poverty Reduction Public Consultation meetings that were hosted by Minister Deb Matthews in June, 2008? For more information about Smart Meters - see Websites for Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario and LIEN |
