First planetarium in Bangladesh inaugurated | ||||||
DHAKA, Sept. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- A rare opportunity opened up for Bangladesh's science-enthusiastic people to acquire practical knowledge of the stars and solar system as Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Saturday inaugurated the country's first planetarium in Dhaka. "No nation can proceed on the highway of present world of development without application of knowledge and science and innovation of newer technologies," the Prime Minister said while opening the "Bhasani Novo Theatre," according to the United News of Bangladesh. Built at a cost of 1.2 billion taka (20 million US dollars), the project has been jointly implemented by the Ministry of Science and Information Communication Technology and the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. Housed in the planetarium complex, among others, are an exhibition hall where world evolution process will be projected and a 250-seat lecture hall for holding seminars and symposiums on various topics of science and technology. The prime minister in her speech unveiled various steps of the present government for promotion of science and technology. The steps already taken include reorganizing of the Science and Technology Ministry according to need of the time, and measures for encouraging children in science from the school level, considering every secondary school as the focal center for practicing science. |
