Part 14
Toshiya was just about to enter the building when his phone beeped. A smile appeared on his face when he saw that he received an SMS from Die. It read: ‘ Darling~ what do you want for breakfast?’ Toshiya typed ‘red bean cakes’ and sent it to Die.
It’s been two weeks since they got together in the hotel. And since then, Die had been the perfect lover and everyday seemed like a surreal dream to Toshiya. It seemed to good to be true. But it was true, wasn’t it? Die loved him and Toshiya appreciated that. But everytime he saw Kaoru in the studio, his heart felt as if it might stop. He was afraid that everything he had with Die over these 2 weeks, all the happiness he felt from being loved by someone would dissipate. But Kaoru acted as if everything was normal…at least so, on the surface. All of them would be practising, attending magazine shoots, mulling over unfinished music scores as usual and Kaoru didn’t threaten or hurt him physically anymore.
Toshiya was almost happy.
Everything was okay again.
When Toshiya opened the door to the studio, his heart almost skipped a beat when he saw Kaoru staring at him. They didn’t speak for a second before Kaoru broke the silence.
“ Where’s Die?”
“ Uh…um,” he stuttered.
“ He’s late. He knows we have a magazine interview and photoshoot today,” Kaoru frowned.
“ Why don’t we just tell him to meet us there?” Shinya asked.
“ It’s better if we appear together as a band,” Kaoru said and dug out his cell phone from his pocket. As he held the phone to his ear, the door suddenly banged open.
“ Ah, gomen nasai!” A grinning Die apologized. “ Eh, my phone is ringing…chotto!” Die looked at the phone and missed Kaoru’s seething glare. “ Oh, it’s you, Kaoru~ heh, sorry I’m late^^;”
“ I thought I reminded you to put your alarm!” Toshiya pouted.
Die smiled and placed a kiss on Toshiya’s cheek. “ I had to get those red bean cakes for you~ Wouldn’t want you to start the day with an empty stomach, would we~?”
“ Ooo, you really got red bean cakes*o*! Thank you!!!”
“ Well, let’s get going-_-;!” Kaoru said and started to moved out. “ And can someone wake Kyo up?!!” ><
*** After the magazine shoot, they had the day off but Toshiya had to go back to the studio to get his car.
“ Come back to the studio with me?” Toshiya asked Die as they finished changing back into their clothes.
“ Can’t=p.”
Toshiya frowned. “ Why not? I want some company!” The bassist whined.
“ Come over to my place at 8. I have a surprise for you!”
“ Surprise? I know! You’re gonna cook me a candlelit dinner*o*!!”
“ Ah! Toshiya! You spoilt the surprise!!” The older man gasped.
“ It’s your own fault for not being more imaginative!” Toshiya laughed and waved goodbye to Die as he climbed onto the van. “ See you!”
*** Kaoru lowered his magazine as Kyo peeked into the van. “ Hey, you guys go off first! Shinya and I are gonna go do some shopping!”
“ You’re going shopping without me?!” Toshiya pouted.
“ Come if you want,” Kyo said.
“ Haha, I’m just joking! I have a date with Die-kun later!”
As the door slid close and the van moved off, suddenly Toshiya felt as if the atmosphere in the van had grown thicker. He was sitting in the front row while Kaoru was sitting behind. How come he was left alone going back with Kaoru? Toshiya tried to shake off the tense feeling but he felt as if Kaoru was looking at him…a pair of eyes watching him like a predator…
The young man risked a glance backwards.
The guitarist’s head was lowered, attentively reading his magazine with the earphones of his Ipod hooked to his ears.
‘ I’m being paranoid.’ He told himself.
The whole way to the studio, they didn’t exchange a single word.
When they arrived, Kaoru got up and his hand brushed against Toshiya’s arm as he passed him. Toshiya flinched and the other man looked back with a questioning expression. The pendant of Kaoru’s necklace had fallen out from the inside of his shirt, dangling on a silver necklace.
As Kaoru got down and walked into the studio, Toshiya was still sitting in the van. Suddenly the back of his hand felt painful. When he looked down, he realized he had been digging his nails into his hand for so long that the skin almost broke.
For some reason, his heart was crying.
He hadn’t realize it before.
But after seeing the pendant, all the memories, which he thought he had buried away, resurfaced.
It seemed like ages ago…almost 2 years ago.
It was the blue crystal pendant he gave to Kaoru for his birthday.
…and Kaoru was still wearing it.

...I thought I hear the flutter of my wings as I fly away...when in reality they are just flapping against these invisible walls...
