DIY unhooking mat.

I like making my own kit.  Not only is it much cheaper then buying specialist kit, but I get the satisfaction of using something that I made.  So this month, how to make an unhooking mat.  You will need:

  • A foam sleeping mat (about £3-4 from a camping shop).

  •  Plastic sheeting (could use a heavy duty bin bag or the stuff that a new bed/sofa etc is wrapped in).  The plastic is required in addition to the foam as it forms a wipe clean surface that is kinder to the fish.

  • Glue.

Step by step guide to making an unhooking mat:

  1.  Cut the unhooking mat to the appropriates size. Around 3ft long is ample.

  2. Cut the plastic sheet to the appropriate size.  Cut the sheet slightly larger that the foam mat you have just cut- you can snip of excess later.

  3. Apply the glue (should be a waterproof glue), then carefully stick the plastic sheet and foam mat. make sure the two are flush, with no air bubbles or ruffles.

  4. Leave the glue to dry and then roll up your new unhooking mat, tying it up with string (for that rustic look!)
