The Marist School , in a joint project with the Office of Mayor Marides Fernando of Marikina City and the Knights of Columbus Concepcion Council 7631 will be launching a Metro Manila - wide Kundiman contest. It will be held at the historic Kapitan Moy on December 14, 2008. Letter of invitations will be sent to all Mayors of Metro Manila to send one contestant from their city. The winner will be awarded with cash, trophy and a title "Hari ng Kundiman”.
This project is a fresh attempt to revive and promote the ethnic Filipino music form among the present generation. This is also targeted among Filipinos who are living abroad-around 8 million of them- for them to maintain a link with their motherland through our native music.
Kundiman is almost identical with Spanish and Italian love songs. It is usually accompanied by guitars.
Marikina is a very historical city. Nestled in a valley, it is known all over the world as the Shoe Capital of the Philippines. It is also the hometown of Bayani Fernando, considered a folk hero in his hometown; he is now making waves as one of the leading presidentiables of the Philippines.
Marist School is the leading exclusive Catholic boy’s school in Marikina Valley. Manny Pacqiao is studying in one of Marist Schools in Mindanao. Knights of Columbus is the biggest and strongest church - based civic organization in the city.
