New Preface 4 November 2002

This page turned off someone I was emailling, maybe I should change it. I suppose I am looking to get better at the relationship game, I suppose that is the main game of life. Do I try to change or do I develop better masks, or like everything there is a balance to be struck. Is that a Marx/Heglian thesis, antithesis, synthesis rearing up in all I consider. Marriage as a strict goal, memoryless and risk free interaction as the antithesis and the synthesis being to see both possibilities in every relationship. Broker and negociate with the other for maximum (mutual) benefit, whether unconscious or deliberate this is the way of the world, and is actually upbeat in that relationships be of benefit to both parties, everyone should happily gain, unless they are blocking better relationships. A bit cold but really the cynical view of the world keeps me attached to it, instead of daydreaming all the time. I hope you at least enjoy this risk free page, even if I do not get to know you. I am too serious in this part of the page and too off hand in the rest. I need this contrast, if one mask does not fit there is an option for another.

Just a quick intro to me, work in computers, though seek an escape to
more culturally diverse pursuits, through reading, writing, acting,
salsa dancing, medium to poor attempts to social network and any
number of stop gap measures. I seek someone to share the odd day a
week in conversation, with enough distance to walk away in 30 seconds
(a quote from the film Heat). I am a bit awkward and a lot manic
depressive (these things may be related) so there is more than one me
to get to know. I like the proclaimers, as Austrailians used to sing
proclaimers songs to me and my brother a lot due to our red haired
bespeckledness. Have a blast/ nice day. Whatever.

Essay Answers:

Describe the type of person you might be interested in meeting (either
romantically or platonically). What traits do you find attractive?

Can get used to anything(*)
(*) but avoid the top 10% and bottom 10%,
which gives me 80% to play with,
does that make me Liberal or Conservative,
or just tired of chasing and no reasonable offer refused?

What personal habits of others really irritate you?

Repitition and bad speeling.

Describe your personality and physique. (Here is a good place to make
up for not having a photo on-line or telling things photos can't
   tell).

On a good day anything is possible and I chat away like a
chipmunk. On a bad day, its like I have the worst hangover
imaginable. I realise people prefer the slightly up inbetween
days but 'He who twists my dial' seems to have a very nasty
and repetitive sense of humour.

Which virtues give you most of your self confidence? If you could
change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My self confidence comes from it me (and maybe you) against
the world, bizare heroic child like fantasies, but you have
got to dream. Anyone against dreaming shall be first against
the wall come the revolution.

Where have you met most of your current friends? Describe your social
   circle of friends.

Never trust anyone you met after they were 30. (Bad joke).
Trust builds like a coral thing, slow building but gets pretty
big. Must try harder to get to know more local people, hence
half baked endevours like this one.

What is your insight into spirituality, and how do you practice this
   belief?

Spirituality weighs heavy enough on my head I must free myself
from it, there are many things to be known and investigated
rather than falling back on (Christian) dogma.

From Confusious Analects:
Fan Ch'ih asked what constituted wisdom. The Master said, "To
give one's self earnestly to the duties due to men, and, while
respecting spiritual beings, to keep aloof from them, may be
called wisdom." He asked about perfect virtue. The Master
said, "The man of virtue makes the difficulty to be overcome
his first business, and success only a subsequent
consideration; -- this may be called perfect virtue."

But I fail (from Becket - try again, fail again, fail better)
, I shadow box with great questions (to no effect) and leave
chores undone. It is not unusual as Tom Jones would say!

Do you belong to any organizations, clubs, teams, or special interest
   groups?

I play a few sports socially (squash, softball, badmington and
indoor soccer) and meet a few people through them. The way to
meet people is to know people !

Favorite pastime? Sport? Hobby? Diversion? Just what goes on Sundays
   at your place?

Sleep is a big thing, and reading the papers. (Sunday Business
Post)

How would you characterize your political leanings? (i.e. Democrat,
Republican, Reform, Libertarian, Independent, radically left/right,
   don't care).

I'll see your left wing and double it. I went to the Socialest
Workers Party meetings for a while but was not activist enough
to do anything about it.

What language(s) do you speak, read or write?

Tiny amounts of French, Irish and German

If you could 'Do Lunch' with anyone, who would it be?

Bobby Fischer (had not really thought about it, but basically
some mad genius, maybe I should have said John Nash ...)

If you were to meet someone for the first time, what would be the
   "perfect" setting?

A mutual friends party. (Just reliving last time I met a
special someone).

What is "SEXY"? What do you find "SEXY" in a partner?

Not into this at the moment, but I am a man and will probably
change my mind damn fast!

What type of music do you enjoy? List performances or concerts you
   have attended.

The Proclaimers, I listen to CDs at work and get grow to like
most things (but my CDs are over borrowed, but its better to
be down a CD or two than get paranoid 'All property is
theft'..) Jack L, U2, Billy Bragg.

List some of your favorite lines from movies, poems, songs or
   commercials.

Nothing comes up, stage fright or maybe just mild dyslexia!

What are your all-time favorite movies and/or actors?

Total Recall, Blade Runner, A Beautiful Mind.
Actor John Cusack

Where do/did you attend high school and/or college? What are/were your
   favorite subjects in school?

St. Colmans College Newry
Trinity Hall, Cambridge
UMIST Manchester
I thought it all meant something, I could have been a
contender, but now I have forgotten it all!

Where were you born? What is your ethnic origin or ancestry? List some
of the places you have lived or traveled.

Travelled all over Europe, lived in Holland and Canada,
travelled briefly to U.S.A., Cuba and India.

What type of work do (did) you do? How long have you been (were you)
in that line of work? Do (did) you enjoy it?

I used to enjot computing but competence is drifting from my
fingers and my skills pale in comparison to younger employees
and my piers are reaching management positions. (Sigh).

If you could pick one super-human power (such as comic-book characters
   have) what would you choose?

The ability to listen and think at the same time.

Someone may want to say "hello", but not know how to get the ball
rolling. Ask a question that someone can answer in their first letter
   to you.

What interests you most about your work and why?

What are some of your life-long goals? Where would you like to be in 2
   years? In 5 years?

I would like to be more organised, I have never planned goals,
I live life one day at a time.

Any additional comments? Is there anything that the questionnaire
   didn't cover?

I am daft as a brush (bipolar/manic depression), and expect
anyone contacting me to have at least one major personality
defect. We will, like true adults be thus able to have a
ritual slagging match, without waiting nervously for our 'True
Selves' to be uncovered.
