Fighting wasn't something he had ever thought of doing. Married at an early age to a strong wife who believed in fighting for the independence of L5 colony, Wu Fei himself was a quiet scholar, content to stay immersed in his books. The death of his wife, in battle, appears to have had a devastating effect on Wu Fei. Although they had not been close in life, after her death Wu Fei took up her cause, abandoning his books and becoming a soldier.
His dead wife is also embodied in Wu Fei's gundam. He has named the mecha Nataku after a fierce Chinese warrior-goddess and is thought by many to worship the machine and think of it as being alive.
Wu Fei appears to me to be the most mature of all the pilots. In some ways he has the mannerisms of a much older man, one who has been hardened by grief and war and has no patience for those who appear weak or incompetent.
Throughout the first half of the series, we see Wu Fei by himself, traveling in his gundam to various battle sites and doing what he feels is a much better job of fighting than the stupid mortals he encounters there. Wu Fei is also biased against women warriors.
Wu Fei's connections to other characters in the series are sketchy at best. He earns the admiration of Sally Po, a fellow Chinese woman, whom he assists in her role as a rebel leader in what used to be China.
Wu Fei is also sometimes linked with the leader of the Federation's OZ faction, Treize Khushrenada. Upon meeting the young pilot, Treize seems to show a fascination with him that could be implied as romantic interest and not admiration of the boy's fighting technique.
