Duo Maxwell is Gundam pilot 02, coming from L2 Colony in the mecha built by that colony's brilliant scientist, Dr. G., Duo's gundam, called Deathscythe.

In the series, and later in the OVA, Endless Waltz, we learn that Duo was orphaned at the age of four, when Federation troops destroyed the neighborhood he lived in on L2. From that time until we meet him in Gundam Wing, his childhood has been the stuff of an investigative journalism expose on street children. Duo's past was so chaotic and unstable that he even had to give himself a name. More on that intriguing aspect of Duo in the coming weeks. Because Duo has lived not only in desperate poverty, but has had the most important things in his life (namely the people he has loved) taken away from him on three highly traumatic occasions, Duo has found an incredibly ingenious way to make sure he always owns at least one meaningful thing, that noone can take away from him: his hair. Duo's one defining physical characteristic is his waist-length, chestnut brown hair, which he wears at all times in a single, long braid. His long hair comes in very handy for hiding lock picks; his street child upbringing has left him with a highly-developed skill for breaking and entering.

While the other Gundam pilots are miniature adults, serious, brooding, or sad most of the time, Duo seems to be perpetually wearing a lopsided (and very disarming) grin. He is extreme comic relief for the other four pilots, whose missions seem to always weigh heavily on their minds. Duo is, at times, almost psychotically cheerful, much to the consternation of his fellow pilots. His optimism appears incredible, especially given the circumstance (having to wage guerilla warfare at age 15) in which he finds himself.
