Pre-Course Reflection on Self as a Writer

Anyone who has ever composed any sort of writing may be considered a writer. Whether someone is able to create profound pieces of literature, or barf up a couple of meaningless paragraphs is a whole other story. I believe that all people are able to write well, but the level of greatness of each and every piece of work is dependent on many things. For example I think that when I am writing about something that I enjoy or understand more than other things, that piece will almost definitely show a better side of my writing skills. Rather than if I am forced to write about a book or topic that I don’t care about. I also think that the greatness of my writing depends on how much time I have, and how motivated I am to write. If I have to write an essay when I have three more hours of other homework assignments to do afterwards, followed by SAT preparation, I am obviously going to end up with some half assed, piece of you-know-what. If I have an entire afternoon to work on something, I’m surely going to put more thought and effort into it, creating a better piece of work. As a writer, of sorts, I think that my writing is very inconsistent based on many factors. I would love to think that based on my better writings I could be considered a “good” writer, but then I remind myself that to be considered a good writer, one must consistently write exceptionally well, regardless of the circumstances of when the piece was written or what the subject matter was, and of what interest it was to me. Then I try and contemplate whether I really think that I am a “bad” writer, because I have, like many others written essays and other works that I should not be proud of based on their quality. However, I do not think that I am a bad writer. As of now, I would like to think that I am in a shady, gray area when it comes to my personal levels of writing. I believe that I, along with everyone else, am capable of writing quality pieces it just depends on whether I am able or willing to put in the right amount of creativity, though, and effort in the process. This is part of the reason I chose to take this class, so I could force myself to be motivated to write in all sorts of styles, and about all types of topics. I hope in this class to become a more consistently “good” writer.
