The lovely historic gold mining town of Ballarat is just 2 hours drive from the Melbourne CBD. Even today remnants of its historic and colorful gold mining past can still be seen in many of the lovely old buildings. The township was in full bloom during the Australian Gold rush, and many of the attractions are reminders of the gold rush times. Unlike Melbourne Ballarat has great weather variations, with very hot summer days, and very cold winter days that may even include snow, thus you have to be prepared for everything when you visit the town.
