January 29,2006
I'm sure many of you were watching the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction
live on when my 1964
Amphicar went across the block around 7PM, Wednesday, January 18th and
sold for a WORLD RECORD $124,200.00!
I never had so much fun in my life!
Earlier in the day, a guy from Speed Channel came over to my Amphicar
with a cameraman and a sound man. They did about a 15 minute interview
with me and TRFNSRF. Then as I was in the staging line waiting to enter
the auction arena, they came up to me again and wired me with a mic
for a "behind the scenes" segment to be aired later.
A couple of times while I had the car, the bolt that holds the seatback
to the base on the drivers door side worked itself out from moving the
seatback back and forth. Wouldn't you know that it would happen to
Roger Sallee while he was driving my Amphi into the arena.
I was talking to people while walking alongside the Amphi when I noticed
Roger struggling with something. I went over to him and discovered he was
trying to get the seatback back into position. I asked him to step out of
the Amphi for a minute and I removed the seatback (keep in mind, the camera
and sound man were on me the whole time) and had to bang the tang on the
blacktop to bend it as it got bent out from Roger messing with it.
The good thing about the camera crew was they had a lot of light with them
and it helped me see to make the repair. I got it finished and Roger
jumped back in just in time to move up onto the block. While I was working
on the seat with all the lights on me, a lot of the people in the arena
came over to see what was going on and it attracted quite a crowd.
Up on stage, I was talking to people, and it's quite loud and crowded up
there, and It sounded like the auctioneer was saying "sixty thousand,
seventy thousand" so I went over to a small monitor in the corner of the
stage and it showed $90,000.00, then $100,000.00, and I was thinking they
screwed up like they ofter do and were going to reset the numbers to
$10,000.00 or something like that when all of a sudden I heard clear as a
bell, SOLD! $115,000.00!!!
I looked right into the camera and said "Holy Shit!" They'll probably edit
that out. It will go in the books with the buyers commission of 8% added
for a record price of $124,200.00!
One of the best parts of the whole deal was just before the Amphicar,
Lot#419 went across the block. It was one of THE ultimate Muscle Cars
A 1967 427 CID/435 HP CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE and it sold for $108,000.00
and had everyone on their feet clapping and yelling.
Then comes my little Amphicar chugging onto the stage with it's whopping
43 HP 4 banger and sells for $115,000.00! Everyone went WILD!
