and Bike Trips

On May 19-20, 2001, the Troop camped at the A. H. Stephens State Historic Park located north of I-20 near Crawfordville, GA.  During the trip, most of the Troop participated in a bike ride of about 30 miles on Saturday afternoon and another bike ride of about 36 miles on Sunday morning as part of their preparation for BRAG.  While most of the Troop were on these bike rides, the rest of the troop had the opportunity to study the wildlife and plants native to this park, bicycle in the park, go paddleboating and participate in other activities near the park office (the old national park "bath house").  Unfortunately, the junior olympic pool was not open yet for the summer season.  Our troop church service was held on Sunday morning after the morning bike ride and packing; just prior to leaving.  The park's web site describes the park this way:

"This quiet site combines the recreational fun of a state park with the educational resources of a historic site. Named after the vice president of the Confederacy and governor of Georgia, A.H. Stephens State Historic Park features a Confederate museum with one of the finest collections of Civil War artifacts in Georgia, including uniforms and documents. Stephens’ home, Liberty Hall, is renovated to its 1875 style, fully furnished and open for tours. Beautiful outdoor facilities make this park a treat for both nature lovers and history buffs."
