From June 17-23, 2001, while half of Troop 134 participated in BRAG, the other half went to summer camp at the Bert Adams Scout Reservation. Troop 134 had two Scouts and one adult leader from Troop 750 join us in our campsite; campsite Pershing. The Scouts either participated in the Rawhide Camper Program and/or took merit badges during the week. Mrs. Mundy was the primary leader for the troops’ Scouts while Mr. Patton helped at (and sometimes ran) the Rifle Range or the Shotgun Range at camp (so the ranges could be run simultaneously or so at least more Scouts would have an opportunity to shoot the firearms). Mr. Gibson of Troop 750 helped at the Handicraft Program Area. The highlights of the week included that David ran the Banana Relay all by himself and came in second in the rifle shooting (I think) event. He received special recognition from the staff for his solo effort. Also, David participated in the Friday vesper service and was chosen to be the co-master of ceremonies for the closing campfire. The combined Scouts of Troop 134 and Troop 750 presented two excellent humorous skits during this campfire program. Mr. Patton was awarded a staff hat and a staff patch in recognition for his volunteer service at the Shooting Sports ranges. (Mr. Gibson of Troop 750 also received a staff hat and staff patch at the beginning of the week in anticipation of his generous service in the Handicraft Program Area.) The weather at Bert Adams was a little cooler (especially at night) than in past years and remained dry until Thursday. On Thursday and Friday, we experienced some short but heavy downpours. Due to the recent rain we have been having, the mosquitoes were a little more of a problem this year, but only during parts of the day. The dining hall food was good and adequate. The new lakefront area looked excellent. In future years, we look forward to using a new dining hall, COPES Course, Rifle and Black Powder Range / Shotgun Range (with a covered shotgun shooting area), and Olympic Size Swimming Pool, to name a few additions. From June 24-30, 2001, Marcus attended summer camp at Bert Adams as a Provisional Scout. |
