Handfasting a romantic way to get engaged!

Many modern couples are now finding that the ancient tradition of handfeasting is great fun, but also a wonderful way to announce an engagement!
At a medieval handfeasting, it was typical for the woman to receive a ring of pledge, which remained on her right hand until her wedding day, at which time the groom transferred to her left hand. The handfasting bound a couple together for a year and a day, which gave the couples the opportunity to experience 12 months of being together. If at the end of this time one or the other wished to end the arrangement, he or she was able to walk away without recourse.
For lovers wishing to take part in the ancient tradition of handfasting, many Renaissance Faires offer special handfasting ceremonies. The couple will spend their day in preparation for the big event by wandering through the faire with their wrists bound together in white ribbon to signify their pledge. Don't be surprised if the handfesting couple is offered all manner of lotions and household utensils,or gifts of the heart from faire merchants to help promote a harmonious marriage!
