This is "The Herd", Saint Matildas latest arrivals, consisting of 10 adults and 5 babies. The 10 adults were confiscated from a person in the Tuscon area of Arizona, along with 347 other types of animals by the Southern Arizona Humane Society. The pigs were taken to the Humane Society facility in urgent need of medical care, as they were suffering from sever malnourishment and mange. One of the females was pregnant and delivered her 5 piglets at the HS . They remained at the facility for 2 months, recovering from their ordeal, with their atrocious previous owner(who has since been charged with felony animal cruelty) The adults were all spayed and neutered by the Humane Society, as well as the little male piglet. The Humane Society initially thought about trying to adopt all the pigs out individually, however, after careful assessment, they decided these poor pigs needed to stay together as an established herd. The Humane Society contacted us and we headed down to Tuscon to collect them immediately. They have been with us for almost a month now and are slowly starting to build up trust. They are gaining weight, and enjoying being pigs again, wandering their pasture and wallowing in mud. Although homes have been found for the piglets, the actual "Herd" will remain here at Saint Matildas to live out their piggy lives with dignity and love. |
