Three Mikes spark offense!
Hawaiians Weather Bad Start to Break 0.500. Division Title in Sight???
After a dominating performance against Glacial Speed last Thursday, the Hawaiian Hillbillies were looking to build on that impressive performance against the much-improved Defrost Ted side. Even more than that they were looking to carry some momentum into a week where they will play the second place team once and the league leaders twice. No doubt the Billies will be tested in the coming week, but last night the challenge was to keep the focus on Defrost Ted. So on a beautiful sunny evening the Hawaiians took the field with high expectations.
Offensively those expectations fell short in the first two innings, and the Hillbillies opened the offensive output with five consecutive fly outs followed by a K. Thankfully the trusty Cow Hide was still active in the field and by the top of the third it was still knotted at zero. Now it was time for the Billies to unveil the new twist in their line-up. By loading up the middle of their order with a tri-fecta of “Mike”s the Billies got just the spark they needed to ignite the stagnant offence. First Stinky drove a ball hard into right, before Gump singled down the left field line; The BIG Unit then drove a liner right down centre to score the first run of the game. Those wily Hawaiians held onto that one run lead until the 5th when Captain Ron and Stinky (who is tentatively being downgraded to a mildly offensive odour) were both driven by the Mikes (who went 10 for 13 collectively). In the bottom of the fifth the Billies surrendered their first two runs of the game so at the top of the sixth they were clinging to a one run lead.
Then Defrost Ted made their move, capitalizing on a Hillbilly defence that all of a sudden had lost its bearings. Even Charlie Brown, the corner stone of the Moonshine Defence had trouble tracking down balls in centre. When the dust had settled the Billies had given up four runs and trailed by 3. Unfortunately for the opposition they had awoken the sleeping giant. In the final three innings the Billies cashed in 14 runs. With the Porn Lover warming up his bat (in the baseball sense) Charlie Brown and Captain Ron came back into form driving balls into power ally once again, while the Hustler, Triple T and the Messiah found ways to get to the bases and around to home. The Ringer blasted balls towards the field where opposing defences are finding out that they pay the price by not respecting her big bat, the Cheetah stepped up at the plate late in the game showing off her blazing speed once again and Porn Lover rounded out the trio of ladies (who may be the best group of girls in the history of GSA Softball) who continue to dare the boys to elevate to their level of play.
In the past two games the Hillbillies have cashed in 41 runs on offense, while the defence has allowed only 11 runs with 12 scoreless innings (over 18), but they will face a greater test over the next three games. Still though this team is one that is peaking at a good time and if they can pull out some wins in the next three games they could very well be in the hunt for the division title.
