Notes from Ron Wyly:
This is a radio show produced by Westwood One Radio
Networks, dated the week of May 3, 1993. It appears to be a collection of
five "spots" of about five minutes each, designed to be played one per day
for five days. As one of the tracks says: "A week-long tribute to The Man".
The host of the show is Richard Skinner. Each spot has a rare, complete Van
Morrison performance, beginning with a 15-second intro by Skinner, then 1
minute of commercials, then Skinner's intro to the particular song, then the
song, then a closing remark by Skinner. The first three tracks (featuring
Van Morrison with Them) are songs recorded for the BBC (I assume live in the
studio) in 1965; the last two are performances from the Glastonbury Festival
in 1987.
Skinner states that Them did two BBC sessions in 1965 (in March and June),
from which tracks 1-3 above came. He also identifies the band personnel for
those sessions:
Billy Harrison - guitar
Jackie McAuley - keyboards
Alan Henderson - bass
Ronnie Millings - drums
Van Morrison - vocals
The disc is in just a thin paper sleeve which looks to be a generic sort of
thing. It simply has the Westwood One logo on it along with their address &
phone: Westwood One Radio Networks, 9540 Washington Boulevard, Culver City,
CA 90232, 213-840-4244.
The disc itself doesn't have a particular label or product code number, since
it was a radio program not for commercial release. The disc itself simply
says "BBC Classic Tracks, The Week of May 3, 1993, Westwood One Radio
Networks, ©1993 ©BBC 1993"
Van-L list member Drawboy notes that: the imprint on my copy says
"Westwood One for the week of June 24, 1991", rather than the May '93 imprint
mentioned by Ron Wyly. The commercials on my copy are also different, with a
rather humorous spot for Schweppes (sp?) tonic water by John Cleese repeated
before each track.
Art Siegel notes that: "the cover scan shown here is from a bootleg. The real
thing doesn't have a cover."
