Duets with Van Morrison on "Turn On Your Lovelight" and "Ain't Nothing You Can Do"
Review by Martin Longley:
Known as Howlin' Wilf in the '80s, singer/guitarist Hunter has now
reverted to his own name, doubtless in a bid to be taken more
seriously. Honed by incessant touring, he's lately appeared as part
of Van Morrison's regular R&B Revue. Indeed, Morrison tosses lines
back and forth with Hunter on two Bobby Bland-associated numbers,
clearly enjoying the raunchier setting. Hunter's writing skills have
developed to the point where nine out of the 14 songs are quality
originals, his guitar reeling off compact solos, the tight-knit horn
duo stepping forward for strategic bursts. He's blessed with an
archetypal soul holler, yelping and squealing with rough-edged
precision, employing some delicate phrasing as he dodges
effortlessly around the beat. It's an impressive debut.
