Total time: (69:51)
Recorded live at San Jose Arena, California. May 19, 1998.
Review by Jon Strand:
Soundboard recording with great separation between voices and the various
instruments.
Van and everyone are in great voice (I have never heard Brian Kennedy
stronger and more soulful. Actually, I've never connected Brian Kennedy with
"soulful" before, but it's certainly true here.)
The horns play wonderfully throughout, both on solos and ensemble work. The
whole band is very tight (and loose.) Very "on:" Van calling out the song
titles to the band. Dedicating "That's Life" to Frank Sinatra ("lest we
forget.") "Whenever God Shines His Light" becomes "Whenever (Sir) Cliff
Shines His Light." Great intro to "Man's World."
This is one of the live CDs that make you keep looking for others out there.
A great performance, well captured.
Notes:
If you have Nights Of The Living Icons, you can
hear the same performance of "Fire In The Belly," but from the audience point
of view.
This CD is not to be confused with On
the Burning Ground (Randall's Island, New York City, June 14, 1997)
