Notes:
The first leg of Van's winter/spring 2000 tour through England and Europe
culminated in two extraordinary nights in the heart of the north country. Van
takes us way back with Lonnie Donegan on "Outskirts of Town," and that's
Chris Farlowe adding his vocal touch to "I've Got A Woman" and "It's All Over
Now, Baby Blue."
Share in the fun as the two whoop it up a bit in "It's A Man's Man's Man's
Man's World."
These two discs give us the magic of Van's voice on such gems as "When Will I
Ever Learn to Live in God?" and "Georgia on my Mind," combined with the
superb talents of a band that Van described as the best in the world. Do
yourself a favor: sit back and put your headphones on for this one. Transport
yourself into a musical journey that lasts for over two hours and delivers
the goods each step of the way.
Listen particularly for the notable sound of David Hayes' double bass on
"Help Me" as he drives the song through to completion. Robin Aspland's gentle
piano touch shines throughout, but is never more compelling than on "In The
Afternoon," where Richie Buckley's sax and Matt Holland's trumpet contribute
to a superb performance.
Van straps on his Gibson for the finale. Recorded only a few days earlier,
here is the debut of "Fast Train," with the inimitable harp and Johnny
Scott's sensuous slide guitar underscoring the poignant lyrics... going
nowhere on a fast train.
