Welcome to the "Card Oddities" section of Traders Outpost! Here, we'll take a look at some individual cards in select series that either make no sense, have verbiage that is completely "off", or are just flat out comical errors! If you have one you'd like to submit, feel free to click on the "Email Webmaster" button to the left, and send it to me! You'll receive full credit for the submission, of course. I'll be adding to this section as time allows, so be sure to check in from time to time!
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Topps, 1978)
Biggest oddity? Richard Dreyfus, star of the movie playing Roy Neary, appears in exactly ZERO cards. We're treated to his silhouette in the station wagon on card #30, but that's about it. His co-star, Melinda Dillon (Jillian Guiler), appears on 18 cards. Even his wife Ronnie, played by Teri Garr, is shown on 4 cards! Hmm...
Card #5: "Strange disturbances caused by the UFOs" shows us 2 of the Neary children, looking upset, with the daughter blocking her ears. UFO disturbances? Roy and Ronnie were involved in a heated argument, which is why the kids were REALLY upset. There was no UFO disturbance at this point in the movie.
Card #6: "Ear-splitting sounds from the saucer!" Again, shows the youngest Neary daughter blocking her ears from the parents' arguing, NOT sounds emanating from a UFO. As a matter of fact, the Neary kids were never even exposed to any UFO elements in the movie.
Rocky 2 (Topps, 1979)
Card #10: "Rocky's Speech". Honestly, I do NOT recall a scene in the movie that had Rocky giving a speech at Abraham Lincoln High School. Where'd this come from? Cut scene?
Card #13: "Rappin' With Paulie". Rappin' with Paulie? That's not Paulie...that's the ratty agent, trying to convince Rocky to do TV commercials!
Totally unrelated, but my favorite line in the movie is when his former boss is trying to talk him into investing in condominiums. "Condominiums?" Rocky echoes. Leaning in close and whispering, Rocky admits "I don't use 'em!"
MORE TO COME!
