UK TRADITIONS

Since discovering the Internet I have "met" many wonderful people and have had long correspondences with many of them. A few years ago, as the holiday season approached, and once they knew which side of the Atlantic I am on, I began to be inundated with enquiries about a "Traditional British Christmas" and questions about things which I soon realised are peculiarly British. I replied to all of them, and quickly realised that I was repeating myself over and over again. So, the germ of an idea for (yet another) website was born.

I have been working on this site for several years now, and STILL it continues to grow, so check back often to see how it's getting along!

You can E-mail me if you have anything specific to ask, or if you just want to say "Hi!" - I promise I will send you a personal reply.

By now you may well have noticed that this calendar of traditional British holidays and celebrations is centred firmly around Christian holidays and traditions. Although it may not be "politically correct" to say so, this is still, nominally at least, a Christian country and the Church of England is still the Established Church, with the Queen as its head. Whilst we are now very much a multi-cultural society, and undoubtedly the richer for being so, our traditions and roots are still firmly fixed in our Christian heritage and for that reason I have stuck to TRADITIONAL British customs and holidays. If you are looking for holidays and ideas from other cultures and religions, you can begin your web search here.

In the census of 2001 there was a section in which the respondents were asked to state their religion : 73% (nearly 43 million people) gave their religion as Christian - an overwhelming majority in a supposedly secular state. (The next two biggest groups were "no religion" and "refused to answer.")
