NEW REIKI BOOK
There are now many Reiki books available, some of which we are comfortable about recommending, and others with regard to which we have strong reservations about content. Recently there has been considerable debate amongst a number of Masters via e-mail as to whether any Reiki books should be recommended to students, as often there is the inevitable expression of an author's personal views which may colour factual information on the practice.

However, there is one new book that we feel is worth recommending to experienced students of the practice. This is entitled "Modern Reiki Method for Healing" and is by Hiroshi Doi, a Japanese Master who has received training in "Western style" Reiki, and then subsequently received training from Mrs Kimiko Koyama, who was a President of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Society which was founded by Dr. Usui himself. The book contains much information that is unique to Japanese spiritual practice and culture, as well as useful historical information about Reiki. It is a must for the serious student of Reiki.

The book has recently been translated from the Japanese into English language, and is currently only available from the Canadian publishers. Fraser Journal Publishing, and is priced at US$16.95 or Canadian$21.95 plus postage and packing, so local cost depends on our current exchange rate. Contact Mari Miyasaka, c/- Fraser Journal Publishing, British Columbia, Canada, on Fax 604-9398780 or e-mail mari@yahho.com for orders and cost.

USEFUL BOOK:
The Channel 9 program "Good Medicine" has recently published a handy reference book entitled "Alternative Therapies - a complete guide to complementary medicine". This book, which is currently available through newsagents priced at $14.95, contains a wealth of useful information on a wide range of therapies, and covers such subjects as origins, philosophy, uses, what a consultation involves, cost, information on training, reference sources, useful contacts and web-sites, etc. Although we cannot vouch for the accuracy of content, which is at least well presented, we feel it is a publication worth looking at.

MASTERY IN REIKI
In the current issue of "Reiki Magazine (International)", Barbara West, a founding member of The Reiki Alliance, a world-wide community of Masters, answers a question posed to her by a 1st level Reiki student who says that he/she would like to become a Master.

She says: "Reiki Master' is not a job title to me, it is a life title. I hold a level of healing and energy in my body and spirit which is carried into all that I am. It is a quality of being rather than doing. Being a Reiki Master is being a steward and a teacher of a system of healing which is simple, powerful and effective. One can be a Reiki Master and come from any country, class system, belief, or ideology...Reiki Mastery is the practice of learning the spaciousness to hold people with reverence, healing, and compassion in their growth, calling, or whatever brings them to our classes or Reiki tables. Some consider being a Reiki Master as a duty, a charge, or as offering a gift of service to one's community. It is a lifelong commitment."

We endorse these comments, and for us it is also our primary vocational commitment.

FOR THOSE WHO WORK IN THE 'MAINSTREAM' MEDICAL FIELD
Are you a nurse or other health professional working in a hospital or clinical environment?

If so, do you struggle with talking about your practice in Reiki because you may be thought of as 'slightly off the planet' or as a 'new-ager'?

Do you wish you had a more scientific name for what you do? Do you have a problem with suggesting a practice with a foreign name?

Then take note of an American medical doctor who practises Reiki. When a patient displays symptoms that he thinks may respond to Reiki, he asks his patients to consider a "non-traditional bio-energetic system of stress relief". That description would go down well with those with a more conventional outlook, and it sounds better than a Valium!

THE DAILY SELF TREATMENT
Are you remembering to give yourself a Reiki treatment on a daily basis?

In every class, we teach the self-treatment routine as the most significant and important part of each class, for Reiki is first and foremost for ourselves to further our ongoing healing processes on all levels - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual; anyone who says that they don't need some healing is - frankly - kidding themselves!!!

So it is interesting for us to find that many students, in wanting to rush out and heal the world, forget about caring for themselves on a daily basis. Takata said "Reiki is first for you!"

Remember to spare ten or fifteen minutes for yourself each day; it is not a huge commitment! After all - you are number one!
