Antietam Battlefield
Up

Good footing and flat to rolling terrain make this a nice springtime destination.

Basic Conditions:

Accessible trailer parking in a large grassy field across the street from the Visitor's Center, just south of Dunker's Church.

Hours of riding on trails covering over 12 square miles.  Most of the trail is the grassy shoulder parallel to the 8.5 mile driving tour road.   There is also a wooded section (Snavely Ford) along Antietam Creek featuring hard packed dirt surface.

There is little shade and we have not found any safe entry into the creek for water. The banks are very steep and the water very deep, so plan this for cool weather.

Avoid the weekend closest to the 17th of September due to battle reenactments and huge crowds.

Potential Hazards:

Curious tourists unfamiliar with horses.

Road crossings and vehicle traffic on the driving tour-slow moving traffic on one-way roads.

One elevated bridge crosses Burnside Bridge Road near the Sherrick Farmhouse.  The most difficult part was the 6 inch grating at the start of the bridge.

The Snavely Ford Trail was a bit washed out right along the creek side near the Burnside Bridge.  You should definitely turn around at the bridge because there are steps or steep banks to get up.
