This is a straight forward hike,
just head up the trail for three miles and enjoy the view.
Deer Mountain isn't a high peak. At 10,013' it only ranks 112th in the park. It's summit isn't even above treeline ..... BUT, it's a very nice hike with fantastic views. It's location in the park gives you views in every direction.
You have two choices for your return trip. When we climbed it on our first day in '01, Andy, Mike and Jason took the trail that headed towards town, while Betsie and I doubled back the way we came to pick up the car. On our way down we ran into Bob and Jodi who had just gotten married on the mountain with Long's Peak for a background. We stopped for awhile and took some pictures with them. I hope they're doing well, they were a terrific group of people. If you guys read this, please get in touch and let me know how you're doing.
The trailhead for this hike is at Deer Ridge Junction,
where Hwys 34 and 36 meet in the park.
