Healers

The folk of Numenor were gifted with a lifespan many times that of lesser Men and were dear to the Eldar from whom they learned much. Thus their healers grew wise and strong in many things, accumulating a wealth of lore. But when the Shadow fell over Numenor, much was lost despite the attempts of the Faithful to save all they could.

So it is that today the leeches of Gondor have forgotten much that their kindred once knew. But even so, they remain the wisest healers among Mortal Men. And it is said that if one delves deeply enough into the dusty depths of Minas Tirith's library, some of the ancient knowledge of Numenor may yet be found.

Joining

So you are interested in creating a healer character. Once your description and history have been approved, you need to seek out a healer (type +hroster) and RP your interest in becoming a healer. This is usually a simple matter of presenting yourself to the healer and saying you would like to receive healing training. At that time the healer will welcome you into the healers, describe what your duties as a novice will be and give you a book object dealing with herblore.

Authority

As shown by Faramir's words to Eowyn in 'Return of the King', the judgment of a leech is ICly considered supreme in matters of healing. While the healers are expected to respect a player's desire to get his character healed and on his feet as soon as possible, the player should also bear in mind that he will not be released before the healers judge him to be able to fend for himself.

Ranks

Novice: This is where all healers begin in their training; players spend a brief time here learning the basics of being a leech before moving up to the next rank. In addition to learning these basics, the novice is also expected to the more physically demanding tasks of the infirmary such as cleaning and washing. They are expected to stand by in order to observe and procure needed supplies when a healer treats a patient, but they are not allowed to touch the patient themselves. However, they may lend comfort and aid patients with such things as eating.

Apprentice: They work at assisting other healers. They may provide battle dressing (first aid) unsupervised. They may also administer herbal treatments and change bandages but not diagnose. As the apprentices approach promotion, they are left with increasing levels of responsibility for supervision and instruction of novices as well as management of an infirmary.

Healer: This is the first level with IC and OOC responsibility. Healers are greatly respected in the realm. Their word is treated as both wise and learned. Even the highest Lords of Gondor hesitate to ignore their counsel in matters of leechcraft. Players will only attain this rank after demonstrating that they have mastered their craft and attained a suitable level of RP skill.

Healers are expected to supervise and instruct apprentices and novices, as well as diagnose and treat nearly all illnesses and injuries. They can also delve deeper into the art of leechcraft and ancient knowledge under the tutelage of a Master.

Master Healer: They are the wisest of the wise and the most learned in lore among the leeches of Gondor. Generally, this title is awarded on the basis of excellence in Role Play as it is a position of OOC as well as IC authority.

The role of Master Healer is more scholarly. Rarely do they meddle in the day-to-day affairs of healing except to provide guidance and instruction or in times of need. Only in the direst instances do they tend to patients themselves.

A step above the rank of Master Healer are the positions of Master Healer of Minas Tirith and Master Healer of Dol Amroth. These positions are filled only by order of the Steward or the Prince and it is understood that these are the foremost in Gondor in terms of knowledge.

Uniforms

While Healers do not wear uniforms in the sense that a soldier does, there are prescribed modes of dress and indications of position. All healers will wear a grey gown, robe or tunic and breeches covered by a long white tabard to protect from the worst of stains. The hair will be at all times secured to prevent its falling undone in moments of stress. The following additions will be present upon the gown to indicate the healer's position:

Apprentice healer: A strip of red at the cuff and neck, either embroidered or sewn securely on.

Healer: A strip of blue at the cuff and neck, either embroidered or sewn securely on.

Master Healer: A strip of gold at the cuff and neck, either embroidered or sewn securely on.
