Driebilbis and Onyx Caves November 19,2006
On November 19,2006, Mike took a small group from Commander Cody Caving Club to Driebilbis and Onyx Caves.
Onyx was once a commercial cave. The current owners have been restoring parts of that and have done a fantastic job. A few folks went in with their helmets and headlamps to be able to crawl around a bit. But because there were lights in the cave, and some resembelance of a walking path, I chose to just wear street close. There are some nice things to look at in there and a few places to crawl around in, if your so inclind.
There was a previous visitor that for some reason couldn't find their way out again. Members of the party had to do a “recovery” of the poor demised racoon. It was peacfully laid to rest across the street in the woods.
On to Driebilbis.
For those who have read previous reports on this cave know that is a “sporty” little cave. The entrance for this cave is a small four to five foot stretch of eighteen inch pipe with a locked door at the bottom. This small pipe is deliberate to filter out those folks who might have difficulty negotiating the “sportiness” of this cave. It did serve that purpose that day. We did wind up with seven people getting in.
We only did the “Cork Screw” to the back of the cave. Once you past the tight spots, it does open up and has some neat passages that you can poke into. There is also a couple places where you need to climb. This makes this cave, in my humble opinion, not too good for the first time caver.
But we did have a couple. Not to name names to protect the inocent, we had a ten year old and a fifteen year old who had no objections to try any part of the cave we ponted them to. They even wanted to seek out places and crawled and climbed.
Oh yeah, getting out is just as tight as getting in. Back up that eighteen inch pipe.
Eventhough it is a small cave and we actually were only in there a couple hours, it's one of those you feel the next day, as I did. Can't wait to go back again.
Please feel free to visit the picture album for this trip.
