Chapter 86

"Hi Ms. Evans, how are you feeling today?" the nurse asked as Kevin and I walked into the room.

"Pretty good. But I'm not enjoying the whole weight gaining thing," I said.

She smiled. "Unfortunately that can't be prevented."

"Too bad," I replied.

"So I presume that you are the father?" she asked as Kevin helped me up onto the table.

"Yes, I am," he said proudly.

"I can tell, you're beaming with happiness, both of you are," she said.

We just smiled at each other.

"Do you want to rub this gel on her stomach?" she asked.

"Sure," Kevin said.

Kevin lifted my shirt and softly kissed my stomach.

I giggled as I felt his whiskers.

"What?" he asked.

I touched his face. "Tickles."

"Oh," he said as he smiled at me.

The nurse handed him the bottle. He squeezed the gel onto his hands. Then he rubbed it on to my stomach.

"Okay, you can wash your hands in the sink right there," the nurse said as she turned the machine on and placed it on my stomach.

Kevin went over to the sink and washed his hands.

"Okay, this will only hurt for a second," she said as she showed me the needle.

"All right," I said as I looked away.

She poked me and then walked away a couple seconds later.

"All done," she said as Kevin stood by me and took my hand.

"Now do you want to see your baby?" she asked.

"Yes," we both replied quickly.

She smiled and then turned on the screen.

Kevin and I watched as a figure slowly began to appear on the screen.

"That's our baby," Kevin said as tears filled his eyes.

"Yep, our beautiful child," I said as I held his hand tightly.

"Actually, your beautiful children," the nurse corrected.

"Excuse me?" I asked.

"What did you say?" Kevin asked.

"Looks like you're going to have twins," she said happily.

"Twins?!" I asked surprised.

"Two babies?" Kevin asked shocked.

"That's right," she said.

Kevin bent down and kissed me on the forehead.

"Wow, two babies," I said.

"Oh god, I'm so happy," Kevin said. "Another beautiful child."

I squeezed his hand tightly as I looked up at him. He smiled at me.

"So do you want to see these kids?" the nurse asked.

We quickly shook our heads yes.

"Okay," she said. Then she began pointing at the screen. "Here's your baby's head and here's another little head. And here you can see the babies legs and arms."

Both Kevin and I watched in amazement as the babies moved around.

"How are they?" I asked.

"Perfect. Both of them have a good strong heart beat," the nurse said. "Just continue to take care of yourself and everything should be fine."

"Don't worry, I'll make sure to take care of all three of them," Kevin said while smiling at me.

"That's good to hear," the nurse said. "Okay, I have to go take this out so we can take it to the lab to determine the sex of the children, so I'll be back soon."

"All right," we said.

Then she left, closing the door behind her.

Kevin and I just watched the screen.

"Oh! Did you see that?" I asked excitedly.

"One of the babies just kicked, didn't they?" he questioned.

"Yeah," I said. "Now I know why the baby has been kicking so much. I've got two of them kicking me."

"Active little guys, huh?" Kevin asked.

"Or little girls," I said.

He smiled and then bent down and kissed me on the lips.

Then the nurse walked back in.

"When will we get the results back?" Kevin asked.

"In a few days, Mr. Richardson," she said.

Kevin looked at her puzzled. "How did you know my name?"

"I have a 16 year old daughter, need I say more?" she asked, smiling at him.

He chuckled. "No, I guess not."

The nurse walked over to me and took the machine off. Then she shut the screen off.

"Here's a wash cloth, so you can take wipe that off," the nurse said.

"All right," Kevin said.

He wiped the gel off of my stomach and then pulled my shirt down. I sat up and he helped me off.

"Okay next time you come in we will have the results and pictures and a video of the ultrasound," the nurse said.

"Thank you," Kevin said.

"You're welcome. And we'll see you two lovebirds later," she said.

"Bye," I said as we walked out.

Kevin and I went home and just relaxed the rest of the day.

"Janel," he said.

'Yeah?" I asked.

"After we take you to the doctors for the results, I think it's time that I take you home," he said.

I just laid there in Kevin's arms thinking about going home. Ever since I was a child I had never really felt at home anywhere, unless I was at Kevin's. Now I'd finally have a place to call home, where Kevin and I could be together. And soon we'd be a family.

"Pumpkin, what are you thinking about?" Kevin asked.

"Going home," I replied.

"Do you not want to go home?" he asked hesitantly.

"No, that's not it at all," I said. "I was just thinking about how much I do want to go home. To be in our own house with our own things. Away from everything and everyone, just the two of us."

"Correction, the four of us," Kevin said as he rubbed my stomach.

"Yep, just me and my family," I said as I turned and snuggled close to Kevin.

"Tired again?" he asked quietly.

"Uh huh," I said as I closed my eyes.

"Just relax," Kevin said as he rubbed my back.

I laid there enjoying his soothing touch on my back when his cell phone rang.

Kevin sighed.

I sat up and let Kevin answer it.

"Hello," he said. "Oh hi Mom."

I smiled as I heard him say mom. It seemed that Mama Ann always had perfect timing.

"Yeah, Janel is sitting right here," Kevin said. "All right, I'll give her the phone."

I shook my head no. "Tell her I'll call her back in a couple of minutes."

He shook his head okay. Then he told Mama Ann what I had said. She listened to him and then they hung up.

"Why'd you say that you'd call her back?" Kevin asked.

"Cause I'm starving," I said as I got up. "And I know that any phone call with Mama Ann is always going to be long."

"Oh," he said as he got up and followed me into the kitchen.

"So what are you going to eat?" he asked.

"Anything I can get my hands on," I said.

Kevin just laughed. "How about that lasagna that you made?"

"Mmm. . .that sounds good," I said.

He just smiled at me as he got the food out.

Once he had all the food ready we went out into the living room and ate on the couch.

I set my food on the coffee table next to me and then called Mama Ann back.

"Hi sweetie!"

"Hi Mama."

"How have you been? I haven't talked to you in forever."

"Umm. . .pretty good."

'Kevin told me that I'm going to be grandma again."

"Twice."

"What? You're having twins!!"

"Yeah. Kevin and I just went to the doctor today and they did an ultrasound. And it looks as though I'm carrying two bundles of joy."

"Really? That's so wonderful. Are you two happy?"

"Yeah, we're ecstatic. Neither of us can believe that our little family is expanding so quickly."

"What was the ultrasound like?"

"It was amazing to see these two little human beings inside of me. I still can't believe it. And Kevin, he's just so excited to be a dad. He's always singing to the babies and talking to them."

Ann laughed. "Sounds like my son. So do you know if their little boys or little girls?"

"We don't know yet. But we should find out within the next couple of days."

"You'll make sure to call me?"

"Of course, Kevin and I will be on the phone right away."

"Good, cause I don't want to be left out of the loop."

"Don't worry, you won't be. We'll make sure our babies get to see their grandma often."

"Yep, so I can spoil them."

"I wish my mom and Papa were here to see this."

"Yeah, so do I. But they're watching from up above."

"I hope so."

"I know they are sweetie."

"They better be."

"So have the little ones been kicking?"

"Oh yeah, and it's always so surprising. Sometimes I forget that I'm pregnant and then there's this friendly little reminder."

"How have you been feeling?"

"Actually pretty good, but I'm gaining weight like you would not believe."

Ann just laughed. "That happens sweetie."

"I know it does, especially at the rate that I've been eating."

"That's good to hear."

"That I'm gaining weight?"

"Yeah, and that you're eating good."

"I guess."

"So how are you and Kevin?"

"We're good. I don't plan on leaving him, ever, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't plan on leaving either."

"That's right," Kevin said as he kissed the top of my head.

"I'm glad to hear that. I was so worried about you two."

"Yeah, well things were very shaky for a while, but they're better now. Things are finally beginning to go the way they should."

"That's wonderful. So are you moving back in with my son?"

"Actually we plan on leaving sometime very soon."

"Okay well let me know when you do, so I know where to call you at."

"We will."

"Thanks sweetie. Well I guess I better let you go. I was just calling to check up on my babies."

"Bye Mama, love you," I said.

"Bye Mom! Love you," yelled Kevin.

"Love you guys too! Bye," she said.

I hung up the phone and then snuggled close to Kevin.

"So we're going home soon?" Kevin asked.

"Yeah, I've all ready put in my two weeks notice at Target," I said.

"You did?" he asked surprised.

"Yeah, I figured that afterwards we could decide what we wanted to do. But we've all ready done that," I said.

"Yep. My babies are coming home with me," he said as he kissed me.

I kissed him and then hugged him tightly.

"So when is your last day?" he asked.

"This Thursday. Then we can leave as soon as I get the results from the doctor," I said.

"Good. I can't wait to be home," he said.

"Me either," I said.
